According to the reports, its an operation on a swollen bursa in his elbow. A bursa is a kind of fluid filled cushion between joints

Tragic could tell you a lot more (and I hope he doesn't savage me too badly for my explanation) but I've had two removed from my shoulders because of swelling and apparently they grow back after a period of time (around 6 weeks)

Fyfe may only have his drained and treated with antibiotics to clear up the inflammation.

Either way, it is likely realistic he'll be good to go for round 1

So, there are people criticising the coaching staff for wanting to run Hogan through the midfield. Why not give it a go, he has shown he could do it at Melbourne and where is the evidence the running through the midfield was solely responsible for his foot injury, If Hogan is in the midfield then I would assume we would still have Tabs, Lobb and possibly Cox as tall marking targets in the forward 50.
Ironically, there were also many on here over the past couple of years advocating for our captain to play as a forward, robbing us of our best midfielder. I don't get it.

I'm not surprised you don't get it.

To others, it's fairly obvious that when you have stress fractures, you don't go around increasing the stress loads. Particularly when he's just recovering from those stress fractures.

Forwards and backs do just as much running as mids anyway.. I remember a game last year when Heath Grundy did the most running in a game 15.3 kilometers playing at full back

It's preseason. Good time to give players a run in different possies. There should be more flexibility. Reasons for injury? No one here seems to have a clue. I haven't. But running 15kms on the fwd half can't be too different from 15kms in the middle.
I am sick of our coach being so closed minded about players' best positions. So Hogan gets a run up the ground here and there. So what, about bloody time some flexibility has been shown at FFC.

As for Pav playing midfield early in his career, he was still playing midfield regularly in 2012. And right to the end of his career he would occasionally put himself in the midfield if he thought it would help.

Hogan's a Full Forward CHF right? So isn't it a win for the opposition coach to have him in the Midfield so he can use his best / Beast defenders on the other forwards?
Put Louge in the Middle if you want a Big mobile Mid, leave Cox / Hamling and Pearce down back and have the bloody forwards playing in the forward area doing what they are good at - Kicking Goals. Wish our lads would light up some torches and go looking for the RL and have a come to Cheeses meeting and tell him they are going to play good old fashion footy as a team, putting the ball between the big ones.

Playing midfield doesn't mean more running, Cox and Crowden both topped our GPS numbers in different games last season while playing as forwards. The midfield involves more consistent running opposed to sprints like up forward, especially with the way RL likes to push his forwardline up the ground all the time then race back towards goal.

In any case, Hogan is an athlete with a big body like Pav, he can push up the ground and run the oppositions best defender ragged all day. Not many talls can go with him. It's silly to suggest he just sit up forward and let the big defenders belt him, he should be using his best attributes to benefit us most and that's running up the ground like Pav often did, drawing smaller opponents he will smash in the air.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

This is like an episode from The Castle.....our coach is dreaming if he thinks the best value from recruiting a forward is to play him in the midfield. Bollocks.....and while we're at it we will need a pair of jousting sticks if we re hire our conditioning staff!!

If he has the correct leading patterns, Bizkit, he can run the opposition off their legs working forward of the centre square.

I think it’s about flexibility and exposing the others team’s weaknesses. For example, there is no point having Hogan in the square marked by Barrass while McGovern guards space in front of him. You need to figure out how to get West Coast out of their comfort zone. That might be Tabs or Lobb trying to take McGovern with them up the ground or out of the play, or Hogan pushing up when defended by a bigger bloke. It might even be all three clearing out to leave CamMac or Fyfe one-on-one with a smaller midfielder.

The other concern is if Fyfe gets injured our midfield looks quite light. I can’t see Hogan playing permanently as a midfielder, but there may be times we need a bit of grunt in the middle.

I don’t see why any of this is controversial. Melbourne made it work pretty well with McDonald and Hogan kicking 5 a game between them by having Hogan pushing up and McDonald closer to goal, and I’d expect the same from Hogan and Tabs.

Given Melbourne finished in the lower part of the top 8, it didn't work that well. What needs to happen to players like McGovern, is that the ball needs to be put in such a place that the forward ( in this case Hogan) can take them out of their comfort zone. The reason why McGovern and others like him take so many intercept marks is that these days forward options are limited due to the coaching mantra that forwards need to go up the ground to help midfielders.

If your mids are not good enough to get the footy to your forwards, get rid of them and get some who can. Interesting that Walters is being touted as a mid for Freo this year, he is one player who can get the footy to his forwards, if they are forward.
