‘FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon has given an early indication of his plans for Jesse Hogan, unleashing the star recruit for midfield bursts during Friday's intraclub at Cockburn.’

Hogan doesn't have a the tackle count needed for a Roly midfielder.

Fear not, this is just how Lyon was reconciling having 3 tall forwards in the same team, the answer is they all play dual positions, Hogan spends 30% in the middle Lobb spends 30% in the ruck and Tabs spends 30% on a wing being the link from defence, so 90% of the time we only have 2 talls in attack. The 10% we have 3 talls are immediately after centre square stoppages when the afl mandates we have 6 players in the forward line

It’s no surprise if your saw how Melbourne used him last season. He’s strength is his work ethic, he covers the ground really well and can find plenty of the footy

Yeah, push him to run all day, so he can be a "big bodied midfielder" and watch him break down again. Who would have thought history would repeat. We chased him for 3 or 4 years, because we need forwards, then we get him. You bloody beauty, we will kick some goals at last. Then we learn he is to be playing as a midfielder. Why the hell do we have to cop this crap.

Those that don't learn from their mistakes are condemned to repeat them.

A couple of bursts on the ball never hurt anybody. Mix it up I say.

Nup, I fully agree with RM on this - chf to the goal square is where Hoges plays. I watched him as a junior and I've watched those Deedums waste him out of position in too many games. 10 disposals in the midfield don't even come close to slotting a goal - goals win games, it's dumb to think otherwise.

DS,

You can search for them using the search function on any noticeboard page because there were posts about that very thing. It's marked Advanced Search.

You can also search for all the posts, of which there are legions, about unsuccessfully turning players from something they are good at into something that they were not good at and then watching them play for Peel due to them being played constantly out of position.

It's not new. It's been covered at great length for a long time. I'm surprised that anybody could not know about it.

AND, DS, you don't have to go back very far at all, to see the posts about overworking injured players, trying to make them into midfielders.

My biggest worry about the whole "run Hogan in the midfield" theory is that he possibly left Melbourne because they have done that. Possibly causing his foot injury. If he came to Freo on the assumption that he would be played where he plays best, he may just as quickly leave if that turns out not to be the case. We don't need him in the midfield anyway, we have plenty of midfielders, and if we changed strategy to a running game instead of a stoppage game, we would only need Fyfe and Mundy in there as "big bodied mids".

Just watch how effective Brad Hill can be if Freo have 3 big and a couple of small targets within 70 meters of goal, BEFORE he gets hold of the footy.

I thought one of the reasons CC put Pavlich in the middle to start with was to aid his longevity? It seemed to work out ok.

Hogan pushed up more into the middle last year and kicked more goals than he ever had, as well as getting 18 touches a game. Sounds like Lyon played him in the same role yesterday. Given we've go more depth forward than in the middle, I reckon it makes sense to look at it during an intraclub match.

I think it's a pretty big stretch to speculate that playing more in the middle is why Hogan left Melbourne, especially since that talk started years before Hgoan stepped foot in a centre square. Lyon, if anything, has shown with guys like Fyfe that he tends to acquiesce to players' preference on positioning.

I think when the whips are cracking and we need a goal Hogan is more use to us in the forward 50. He's shown he's pretty keen to kick goals, so I reckon he'll know when to put himself forward.

How would putting a player into the middle aid in his longevity?

You take him OUT of the middle to do that and stick him at full forward or half forward.

You know, with the much less running bit and the much less extracting the ball bit and the much less being tackled in the most crowded area of the ground bit.

As for Hogan, yes he got more into the middle last year. He also got more into the navicular stress fracture last year. You can see where this is going, right?

One would think the obvious way to enhance a player's longevity is to NOT add additional stress to a player coming back from a stress injury. Then again, I'm not getting paid 1.2 million a year to keep my players on the park.

If my memory serves me correctly, Pav was a young fella, slightly built when he came to Freo. He was played in the backline and middle of the ground (gaining AA selection in those areas), before moving forward as he bulked up.
