TOPIC: RL Centre Bounce

We've had the most dominant ruckman (Sandi) and the comps best clearance machine/ball winner (Fyfe) in the side and aren't trusted to win the centre clearances? Even Neale was a gun at getting first hands to the ball. I don't see too many excuses for not at least splitting even in the middle.

The problem comes with our set up and instructions to the players, how we move the ball. Having someone to kick it to ahead of play and not being outnumbered in our own forwardline (because we only have 3 blokes there) are massive strides in the right direction that the AFL has forced upon RL at centre bounces.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

The media and clearly a few on this site seems to think we're going to get flogged in the middle, especialy now that we've lost cowboy and Blakely for half the season. I say, think again. Don't be writting Mundy off because he's on the wrong side of 30. Our centre square personnel are still quite potent. AB, has proven in his rookie year that he's up for the scrap. Mundy and Fyfe will deliver. Sean Darcy, is no mug. Running through there will be Banfield (a Crowley clone), Walters (if needed), and the likes of Conca, B.Hill, Bewley (by the sounds of it, he's the Tim Kelly of Geelong), Cerra and Hughes. And all this while having S,Hill and Blakely as late starters.

With our 3 talls in Lobb, Hogan and Tabs, and the crumbers of Matera, Ballas, Switkowski, Crowden, it's going to be tough to get a gig in our best 22.

While last year's centre clearances are damning, and the reason why we were putting blokes behind the ball, it's a different story this year. Living in the past will continue to haunt you, a wiseman once said.

Rumours have surrounded both Lobb and Hogan coming to the Dockers for a number of years, suggesting to me that we have been aware of the need for targets forward of centre. Whether this is something that has been forced on the club by the AFL or something the club was set on addressing anyway could be debated endlessly.
The situation as it sits now is that, Lyon now has the cattle forward to play a style of footy I am sure many would prefer. Time will tell if he has been coaching to the playing list he has available, or if it is the only way he coaches.

Who those targets are is not what I'm debating. It doesn't matter if it's Hogan, Lobb and Walters as the 3 forwards vs 5/6 defenders at a centre bounce, they aren't going to win the footy outnumbered. Having 6 players there with a slightly better than even chance of winning the ball (as it'll be delivered by one of our midfielders trying to kick to our advantage in a 1v1 or 2v2 etc) will be a huge change.

Talk of personnel changes misses this fact. Sonson is one of the best players in the AFL but he stood no chance when he was forward last year. Same goes for Fyfe, Mundy or even McCarthy, you're constantly outnumbered and receiving the ball from a poorly structured midfield and defensive set up where it doesn't matter how good you are, the odds are stacked firmly against you.

They won't be anymore at centre bounces.

I suppose where I am coming from Biz is that style of play is dictated by personnel available. Given the personnel recruited recently, it would appear a greater proportion of our quality talent will now be stationed forward of centre. If the assumption is made that teams devise their game plan based on personnel then we would appear to better placed now than almost anytime in our history to play to this strength.
Our recruiting would indicate we are committed to playing a different style of footy.

if we are rebuilding, surely you want players to learn specific positions that will actually be a role in the future game plan? Throwing everyone into defense and starting the vast majority of centre bounces and all stoppages with a lot of extra numbers behind the ball is a poor way to teach players anything other than you have no faith in them.

Better players in those key forward positions (not sure Lobb is any better than what we had but Hogan definitely is) will make a difference to how often the ball goes through the big sticks but more important than that will be having forwards stationed forward of the ball.

I'd hypothesise in a 3v5 or 4v6 situation, we'd retain the footy and score maybe 20% of the time. make one of those 3 or 4 forwards Hogan and that increases to maybe 25/30%. When it's 5v5 or 6v6 you'd be looking at odds upwards of 50%.

Morgan:

"It does beg the question of what is the ideal set-up for a team like Freo that will likely lose the centre clearances and has its best kicks at half-back."

No, it RAISES the question. Begging the question is a very specific thing, and I expect better from you.

Quite correct FDB.

I actually posted it, thought about editing it, then decided (incorrectly) that no-one would call me on it. I’m not sure if Shane tracks this sort of thing, but I’d be very surprised if anyone on here edits their own posts for grammar as often I do.

But posting is a performance business and failure is feedback, so I'll leave no stone unturned as I try to write my own story and improve one post at a time.

I can only assume you meant to write “as often *as* I do”.

I used to be a copy editor, and I’ve literally spotted spelling and grammar errors in my peripheral vision before, on the didactics next to artworks in an art gallery I used to work in. I’m the worst.

Well, my confidence is shot. I'll head back to Montyland for a spell, and hope to push back into the seniors by the mid-season break.

I thought our back line goes all right. We have a couple of cracker rebounders down there with pretty good foot skills, and a couple of talls who can hold their own. I'd like to see Louge put in the centre bounce as a monster who could feed a few outside runners. Given we have a couple of tall marking types staying in the forward line that could rock, provided they kick straight.
