TOPIC: RL Centre Bounce

One of my big hopes for the 2019 season is the nullification of RL's defensive tactics with the new rules introduced by the AFL. While no one running the club has a problem with throwing everyone behind the ball far too much, the AFL have brought in some tactics like extending the kick out area for behinds and allowing players to just run out of the square instead of kicking to themselves.

This article outlines another tactic I hope makes a big change to Freo as it forces RL to start his forwards inside the forwardline rather than loading up in defence.

As in the article, last season our go to starting structure was 7 in defense with 5 forward (48.4%) with our next best 6-6-6 (25.8%). We also had another 15.8% of unstated formations which I would suggest are either 8-7-3 or 9-6-3.

Realistically you are little to no chance of scoring much with these formations unless you have incredible ball movement or pace off half back and in the forwardline (eg Richmond). While we haven't addressed the pace problem in the forwardline or our transition, at least with a constant 6-6-6 structure we'll be able to see a few more forward flurries actually work (as well as probably conceding a few more goals).

I like the change and believe it teaches the players to be a lot smarter and better in their roles opposed to relying on numbers to clog up space and slow the game down as a default to rest back momentum after an opposition goal. Even if we lose some games, we give ourselves a chance to bring ourselves back into contests with some Sandi to Fyfe magic. We're getting belted in games under the old system anyway so at least this might give us something to get excited about as we have targets to go towards and faith is placed in players to beat their opponents 1v1.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I see this as a COLA remediation to benefit Sydney when they're at home on the SCG. With the 50m arcs almost touching the centre square they can effectively have over16 players in play at the bounce.

It is the very thing that some fools have been calling for on Dockerland for about 5 years now. Why are the prophets always persecuted and call heretics?

Yes RM people like you were burnt at the stake. Lucky it doesn't happen nowadays as I'm sure Jezza would bring the kero and matches.

If the women are scoring significantly more this year than our last 2, I’d say the new rule would see Freo kick more 100 pt games. The trouble is can we defend those 100 pt scores. The 6-6-6 rule is going to benefit a few more clubs I’d suggest not just the Roly coached teams.

If you want entertaining games with big scores, you won’t be disappointed. But if Freo are kicking big scores and still losing, I’d say Roly would be in a bit of bother by mid season. Had the Pies defended better after a 5 goal lead, 2019 would be so much better.

Sadly, an opportunity to use wrest in its correct form has been butchered. A few moments' silence, please.

It's going to make those 6 defenders a lot more accountable, without being able to rely on an extra number or two. I think this could be a great thing for us given defense is undoubtedly or strength right now.

I think better and more experienced players out trump rule changes. Besides I dont think the 6 6 6 will matter that much so long as our backline is functioning. Scoring points though is bad news and is virtually a turnover.

Interestingly the two grand finalists from last year started with more players offensively.
Contrary to popular opinion other highly rated teams seem to favour players behind the ball. If you were to read many posters on this site this is a Freo only phenomenon.

I think if you actually read rather than picking sides, you'll see it's a bit more nuanced than that. It's about degrees. It's not either everyone attacking v everyone defending.

If Roly thought we'd win the centre clearance, he'd put more forward. Unfortunately our pattern over the last few years has been to maybe win the clearance, but then stuff it up before it got to the forwards. Until we fix that, I'd be putting players behind the ball too.

I just wish they brought this rule in when our centre square was among the best in the league. I wonder whether we’ll be more inclined to start Mundy in the middle for the bounce given the consequences for losing the clearances are a little greater.

It does beg the question of what is the ideal set-up for a team like Freo that will likely lose the centre clearances and has its best kicks at half-back. It’s probably not (consistently) 6-6-6.

I’m curious to see how it plays out. About a decade ago there was a lot of talk of too many blow-outs - to the point that people like Leigh Matthews were talking about timeouts to stem the flow - I doubt this will affect things too much, but if there are some early floggings expect a lot of panel discussion.

It is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.
If we do get beaten in the middle as many suspect will be our biggest weakness, we will need to ensure that very good pressure is applied. If we can cause rushed entries we look to be able to provide good match ups down back.
If we happen to win the ball from centre at least we have the ability to take marks up forward.
I watched a reasonable amount of West Coast last year, and their ability to take contested marks in all areas of the ground was huge.
As far as I can see there are three ways to get clean possession and control .of the play, from a contested situation. A mark, a free kick or get it to the outside to loose players.
Forward of our defensive fifty we had Taberner and Fyfe who I would consider good contested marking players. When Sandilands is available he influences these contests to our advantage.
I am hoping with the players that we now have, we will be able to play Taberner, Hogan and Lobb in the same forward line. If all three of these guys are threatening enough, they demand the attention of their own defender, influencing the oppositions ability to setup their own structure.
I would much prefer Walters in that forward 6. He would make any small defender nervous. Ballantyne is probably next best fit as a defensive forward. I don’t know where McCarthy fits whether he can get fit enough is fast enough and has the willingness to tackle to be in the six.
