TOPIC: Tabs vs Lobb

The thing that gives me confidence for Lobb and Taberner in the same forward line is the mobility of the three other talls. Hogan, Taberner and McCarthy all have the ability to roam.
I know many people believe that forwards should be stationed inside the forward fifty, but most teams second or third talls often roam up to the wings to provide marking targets when exiting the defensive half. Darling had an Amazing season last year taking a lot of marks outside of the forward fifty and out on the wings.
This leaves Lobb stationed closer to goal providing a very tall option one out.

DBTS, 1 forward roaming upfield is a good option, as it leaves 4 or 5 targets forward of the centre. 5 roaming up field is not, for the reason it leaves 1 target up forward. (It also gives the opposition about 8 midfielders and 8 forwards)

When we were looking at trading for Lobb, I was more against than for the move and the big reason for that was his role in the side. He is very mobile for a ruckman and can get around the ground but injuries have effected his career and as a result he'd prefer to play more as a forward.

As such Lobb has a good set of hands forward but isn't great when the ball hits the deck or even on a lead. Tabs is a little better at those aspects but can take a mark just as well. Tabs is near on useless in the ruck however.

When they are both spending the majority of their time in the forwardline behind Sandi/Hodor managing +70% TOG in the ruck, you have to judge them primarily on their forward impact which I'd think Tabs is far and away ahead. Can we survive with Tabs in the ruck for periods though?

It's a tough question that we'll see play out as Lobb will no doubt get a gig alongside Tabs. I'd certainly prefer either of Sandi/Hodor to spend all their time in the ruck with limited need for a back up ruckman. I'd think that'd leave our attack to tall with all of Lobb, Tab and Hogan competing for the same balls in the air and not enough crumbers/runners to feed off them. Tabs, Hogan and Cox would be my preference.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

If we play Hodor more than Sandi (as you might expect) I can see the value in having one of Tabs or Lobb push up the ground a bit, while the other stays forward. Hodor is pretty handy, but he doesn't yet provide the long bail-out option nearly as well as Sandi (few do), so having that support will be helpful.

The fit might not be perfect, but if the selection committee is deciding between Tabs/Lobb and a 4th choice midfielder, at some point you just pick your best 22 and make the coach figure it out.

Picking the best 22 hasn't been the problem. The problem has been figuring out what to do with them.

With the new ruck rule changes, having 3 talls in the forward 6 could be mighty handy, specially with Hodor eating midfielders for lunch on his way out of the centre
