Fremantle have signed Matthew Taberner for a further two-years with the key forward agreeing to a contract extension with the club.

The deal is on top of Taberner’s existing contract for 2019 and will see him at the club until at least the end of the 2021 season.

I'm happy with that.

Tabs has been better than some are prepared to credit and he's steadily improved each season. With the likes of Hogan and Lobb helping to split the defence, he could be a real weapon and it's nice to finally have some depth in tall forwards.

He's also a very good contested mark

He's not a great contested mark, he's a great contester of marks but the merits of him aren't why my eyebrows shot up when I read it.

We've just recruited a new forward line. Hogan is on big money and Lobb says he was recruited to play forward. There is a question mark over how all this is going to work with Taberner down there to and we've got a coach who considers it high risk football to rely on tall blokes taking contested marks.

Why wouldn't you wait and see how it plays out and then extend the contract?

As much as Lobb wants to play forward and we have told him that’s our plan, reality is that when Sandi retires or goes down injured, he is our second best Ruck behind Hodor and there will be games where he will have to start as ruck or quickly be repositioned into the ruck if the starting ruck is injured. If we are developing a new game plan based on multiple talls in the forward line, it becomes very hard to adjust mid game to having just 1, hence having permanently forward regardless of the role Lobb has to play makes a lot of sense. Also Tabs is a good endurance athlete which we all know Lyon loves, so can go down the ground to act as a link player without leaving the forward line empty as Hogan and Lobb will still be there.

That's all true*. It doesn't explain why you'd extend his contract before the season starts.

* except the part about Lyon loving him. He had him playing extended stints for Peel not that long ago.

I think the title of the post says it all. It’s managing your list. That’s what good clubs do. They’ve invested heavily into a once rookie who was plying his craft in the twos. He’s worked hard and the club is rewarding him for that. Question is can and do we play 3 talls. Absolutely. I like to see Tabs and Lobb, give Darcy a chop out. If and when Sandi plays, then it’s a different setup.But well done to FFC for locking him in till 2021.

You'd extend his contract before the season starts if you wanted to make a statement to the player that despite recruiting 2 best 22 players who play in his area of the field, he is still a part of the team's future.

I take the point on the wait and see approach. It's not without merit but the other side of that coin is that they might be getting him cheap now compared to what they'd need to pay if he has a good year as another tall instead of the only tall.

Depth is also a consideration in my view.

I disagree that's he's not a very good contested mark. He is.

In 2018, he was the third best contested mark for Freo.

Fyfe took 22 contested marks from 15 games
Cox took 26 from 16 games
Tabs took 20 from 9 games
So, third on totals but best on marks per game

2017

Fyfe 38 marks from 21 games
Tabs 22 from 8 games

So, second in total and first on marks per game

2016

Tabs 31 from 17 games
Best Dockers player

He has an undeserved reputation as a bloke who can't mark but it simply isn't true

A 3 year contract for a player who's spent most of his time on the fringes of the 22 with two new big money players arriving at the club in direct competition for his spot. That doesn't seem like good list management to me.

Surely you at least wait part of the season and see how it plays out. How Tabs recovers from his injury, how we structure up with the new rules introduced, the new players, potential new game plan, whether Hogan, Lobb and Tabs can even co-exist or if Cox, McCarthy and Dixon are better options in place of him?!

This strikes me as another Danyle Pearce deal.
