DM, statisticians don't take the fun out of everything, they are adding to the fun on Dockerland. What else could we take the **** out of in the run up to the season?

Well, there's been an unusual and almost disturbing level of interest in Jezza's man crush on Ross this summer ...

Don't tell Ross that, he can take it a bit too literal.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I agree with the stats, but not the interpretation.

I think we did deserve 5.7 wins last year, but we won more because we had some home games where we had some fit players. But even without new players, or players getting a year of extra experience, we'd still win more than 5.7 games because we still have a big home ground advantage and we'll still have some weeks where Fyfe, both Hills and Sandi are fit, and we win.

And of course the slime should drop. How lucky were they when 3 Geelong players ended up injured in the last quarter? That sort of luck can't hold up.

Doesn't that paper effectively say that a team that consistently scores more points than its opponents wins more games.

Why didn't I think of that before?

Redned, get with the program, its the team that stops its opponents from scoring more points that doesn't lose.

I was intrigued by Shane's initial post and thought I might do some modelling of my own. I started with the ELO rankings generated post 1995, included wins/losses from last year, factored in an estimate of the strength of recruiting and included a list talent factor. I didn't include a coach talent factor. Chicken entrails were also consulted. Here's the result:
Geelong
North Melbourne
West Coast
Essendon
Sydney
Port Adelaide
Adelaide
GWS
Brisbane
Collingwood
Carlton
Gold Coast
Bulldogs
St Kilda
Hawthorn
Richmond
Fremantle
Melbourne
These are the finishing positions at the end of the season. There may be some surprises there in the bottom eight but the top eight look like something that might be possible. This model predicts a sharp rise for Fremantle next year, same with Melbourne.
Have fun with it, don't put the house on it.

I had no idea that Electric Light Orchestra had such an interest in these sort of things.
