TOPIC: Not learning from history?

If the AFL was to start afresh, would its ideal structure include 10 teams in Victoria or an 18 team competition, both of which lock the league into an unsolvable set of fixturing limitations across a 20+ game season?
Most people would say that with a fresh start you would look at a more workable model that removed the focus on Vic teams and limited team numbers to allow for a fairer fixturing model (and I don’t buy that “NM Tasmania” is an attempt to address this issue - it’s nothing more than a token effort)
If that is the popular belief then what are the AFL thinking with their plans to replicate their current nonsensical structure with thee AFLW. Shirley this was an opportunity to get things right now rather than having to defend a ridiculous AFLW set of fixtures for decades to come.
Top men being paid millions to repeat mistakes of the past!!

12 teams. 5 from Victoria, 2 WA (under sufferance), 2 SA, 1 QLD, 1 NSW, 1 Tas.
22 rounds of proper home and away, then 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 and a GF.
Every team has a women's equivalent, touring together and playing prematch for every fixture till finals.

No matter how they fiddle the fixtures you've got to maintain some interest in the competition. You don't do that by burying your team behind a Rupert Murdoch paywall for 4 of their 7 games.

Maybe we've had it too good the last couple of years - all of the Freo games were broadcast on free to air. The new deal has scotched that - we get the opening round, the final round and a round 3 home game. That's pathetic, why lose 70% of the audience you've built?

Ok, good luck to the girls - I'll watch this weekend's game and then forget you.

The women's league would never get off the ground without being able to leverage the brands, resources and structures of existing clubs. The AFL are doing a lot without a huge budget and they're trying to do it in a way that means there is a professional women's football league for the next 100 years.

It can go wrong very quickly and not many sporting leagues in Australia actually work that well.

If you look at the Big Bash as an example where everyone had new brands. The strongest support early was for the 4 clubs who are extensions of their state side. The split states have had to play catch up and you take a big risk that everyone will end up supporting the same team.

Speaking of learning, I was hoping, with the women getting a team, the club would learn to promote themselves without the hyper masculinity that has been the preferred style under Rosich. No such luck.

I understand that logic Shane and appreciate the current model’s value but I was hoping that a more sensible long term approach could be adopted. If the AFL is willing to pour hundreds of miiliond into GWS and the Suns in order to establish them for the long term, then long term thinking and investment should also be applied to the AFLW. The AFL could easily leverage state pride with a couple of teams per state (maybe 4 in Vic?) and one each to Tassie and NT. That makes a beautiful 12 team comp that can grow into a 22 game season. The only problem with that is that some Vic clubs miss out on a women’s team. Bad luck I say. I’d prefer fair fixturing and a even comp.

You have to create branding for all of those teams. You need a full administration set up for each club, you need facilities and equipment and you need a massive marketing budget to explain it and convince people to take an interest.

Doing it this way, they keep start up costs down and can afford to pay the players a bit more.

I'm ok with AFLW teams being aligned with men's teams, which addresses your points and works in all states outside of Tas and NT. My main gripe is the idea that every Vic team is mirrored. I'd just like the AFL to bite the bullet and limit Vic teams to 2-4. I know it will never happen but it would have addressed significant problems that currently exist in the men's comp.

More Victorian teams means less plane tickets.

I think the expectation that an women's football league should be organised so that the fixtures are neat and tidy is unrealistic. There is not that sort of funding available for it and I think they made the right choice trying to get as much of the money as possible into the pockets of the players.
