On paper I thought the experience level was similar but you’re right CA, JLT games are nothing but an excercise to see what injuries can be sustained. I see Olie Wines has done a shoulder and will be out for 8 weeks. And of course we got our Captain playing in the AFLX. That’ll be a hoot.

We won or broke even at the clearances, and got the ball forward. To nothing or 1 player running away from the kicker. You could hardly blame the midfield for the ball coming straight back at them.

Yes, looking at those line ups we had Meek, Banfield and Brayshaw who hadn't played an AFL game whereas they had Brandner, Rioli, Ainsworth, Ryan, Waterman and Venables. They had Kennedy and Natanui out, We had the Hills out.

Escort Cup 1982.
Todd coped flake for playing a reserves team one game.
1982 Swans won the Premiership.
Looks like Todd won the toss for the jumper call.

Probably the most interesting thing I spotted when I was looking up the team midfield stats was that Richmond was dead-last for clearances and 15th for centre clearances, yet had the most inside 50s in the competition. They were happy to lose in that area, but always had a man behind the ball to mop up and trusted their blokes to move the ball well across the ground an into the forward 50. Lyon seemed to also favour that method, albeit with less success.

It will be interested to see how the new centre bounce starting rules affect the way Richmond play in that respect.

There is no way they’d change the rules from season to season, it just wouldn’t happen.

Undoubtedly your stats identify one of 2018's great problems Morgan. Definitely our midfield output was hopeless, and, yep ,the stats are damning.

But when you consider who we had running through there - or more importantly - who we didnt have running through there, there should be no surprises about our 2018 team putting up some diabolical midfield stats.

Those stats must be viwed in the context of 2 half fit Hills for the whole year,; our main driver & captain out for a significant portion; an 18 yr old 1st year draftee in there for a whole year; a rookie draft pick tagging the opposition's best midfielder; our #1 ruckman being out for almost half the year; and, our #2 ruck being extremely underprepared and; lacking a preseason; and our up & coming Mundy replacement being injured for 3/4 of the year. Add to that, injury to 'makeshift midfielder' Walters at the back end of things, and basically we are a trainwreck!

Consequently, it was a 'makeshift' centreline for the whole year and the only legit and regular 'midfielder' was indeed the bloke that has now taken off to Brisbane.

Yep, it wasnt a great midfield, and yep, the output was poor.

But, I reckon if you asked Docker supporters/watchers what they most despised about Freo matches in 2018, very few would bring up " a hopeless midfield" as their answer. The vast majority would identify the 'complete lack of a forward structure' when moving the ball forward.

When you consider how "half cut" our midfield was, it was blantently unfair & unreasonable for them to have few forward options whenever they did create an opportunity, and I still wince at the number of times in 2018, that we were caught trying to move the ball through the middle of the ground and a ball carrier had to hold the ball up to wait for the foward line to get back.

That all comes about for one reason, and its not because of a lousy midfield. Its completly & utterly the coaching strategy - the gameplan! . THAT was the thing that was hopeless in 2018...

Hopefully, the new rules put an end to all that crap...and whilst Blakely is now injured, if all the others mentioned above hit rd1 fit, ready & able, plus, a couple of hard bodied additions to the team, plus, new rules that 'encourage/force a coach to leave the forward liners where they should be, I see every reason to be optimistic about our 2019 season...especially if we can get Bennell back on the park.

Just to balance Jezza's usual comparisons to Clarkson, I'm pretty sure he values ball winning clearance machines highly, just look at Sam and Tom Mitchell.

Morgan's spot on though, we don't have any clearance machines except Fyfe with the kids still a long way off that heavy toll. Even our outside runners have struggled for a long while now and given our lack of structure and planning, often have little to kick to anyway.

Will the tall forwards we've recruited impact that? I doubt it. We can live in hope though.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It's seems it's Doom and Gloom for 2019 from savvy posters.
I taking 2019 as the season which will see the club go forward on and off the field.
Top eight.
The rebuild will still continue this season as I can't see it finished because we picked up several
players to fill holes and haven't proved they are the anwer.
The rebuild assessment will be on the first six results.
Four win's we are on track. Five maybe.

I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom Mac. Winning the contested ball is just one way to win a game of footy. Teams can, and have, won without being top of the league for clearances, and instead won by winning the ball after the other team gets first possession by exerting elite pressure or intercept marking, and then using it better going the other way. You could make a case that the last two premiers won that way.

But our midfield pressure has also been a bit suspect of late, our forward pressure was non-existent, our intercept marking is probably below average, and although our kicking has improved a bit in the last year or so with a change in personnel (especially in the back half), I’d still say we’re not elite there.

So, yeah, if we aren’t winning the ball in the middle, I’m not sure how we are winning it based on last year’s personnel and form.

All that said, things can change pretty quickly. I think we do have the capacity to be a very good intercept marking team in the back half. I think our kicking back there is now very good, and with a few more outside runners we should have some good exit targets. Big bodies like Banfield, Conca and the VFL boys might be able to exert more pressure around the contest even if they aren’t elite ball-winners. We certainly have some good targets now, meaning there will be every incentive to move the ball quickly when we get it, and we will (eventually) have the forwards to be an efficient scoring team (though I’m worried out forward pressure will be a bit suspect if we don’t take a mark). The positive spin is that if we do win, it will be with elite running, ball use and big marking in the forward half, which would be bloody great to watch. The bad news is that we’d need Lyon to execute it, which I’m not convinced he has in him (although there were some signs of intent – but not sustained execution - last year).

But all that could take a while to come together, and I’m not sure we will be able to execute that in round one. Not having enough ball winners means the margin for error is pretty slight in that time, and in a close game of footy sometimes you just need someone to go and win the ball. Other than Fyfe, and in bursts Mundy, I just can’t see who those guys are.

Morgan, if we play a style which has our centreline and mids playing at and forward of the ball and not a kick behind as we have done over the last 4 years, there will be pressure up forward if the ball hits the ground. But as you say, the entire coaching strategy has to change for that to happen.

Well, yes and no RM. If we consistently lose the contested ball and half our players are stationed permanently forward of the ball, you are either relying on your backline consistently winning one-on-ones, and when they do us being able to take it the length of the field uninterrupted. If we can’t execute that, and it is asking a lot, then the other team wins the ball in the middle, sees one-on-ones ahead of them and scores 200 points a game.

Richmond and West Coast weren’t particularly worried about winning in the middle, but consistently tried to free up loose men behind the play to win the ball (easier when you have guys like McGovern and Rance down back), and then banked on their mids and forwards to break at the right time forward and get to the right spots. Where we fall down is not that we don’t have blokes stationed permanently in the forward 50 – no team since about 2006 has done that - what we need is to transition from back to forward more efficiently, and ensure our forwards are in the forward 50 when we need them there.

That takes end-to-end timing, connection and smart players who have played together. It’s hard to do when most of your players are young or haven’t played together. It also takes a bit of confidence that you’ll get the ball when you do get to the right spot, and licence and communication from the coach.

It’s not a simple fix.

Banfield has shown that he can win the loose ball, his experience tagging should stand him in good stead. I’d like to see him given the chance and let someone else learn the tagging role, at least until Blakely comes back into the side.
