TOPIC: The Full Jezza!!

Right! We are precisely 2 months away from Rd1....and I've got to say.... I'm getting quite excited about all this....

I reckon - all of a sudden- we've got a pretty exciting squad.

It has depth, it has some talent, and it has a good mix of experience/ inexperience. Importantly, I see competition for places, and I really cant see much 'deadwood' in there. More importantly, we seem to be relatively injury free for this time of year. Hogan and Bennell seem to be the only question marks.

Importantly, we might have got through the Xmas/ festival period without any mishaps, - for once.! I've got a feeling that the 'focus' is - at last - right, and, a few murmours from players suggesting that 'playing finals is a serious aim' , is encouraging - and a refreshing change - to say the least!

Then, theres the fixtures !!

I hadn't looked before now, but geez! ....I reckon we have been dealt a good hand. !!

A quick '15min analysis' has got me all "Jezzerish" ( - or Jezzarish if you prefer...)

I reckon we (should) beat NM, Suns, SK, WB , Ess, BL, Carlton, 1 of the 2 against Port. That gives us 11 wins straight up!

For the exercise, I reckon we have trouble with the Tigers, Collingwood, Melbourne, Geelong, and - (begrudgingly) - have given the clowns down the road , 2 wins. I've also given Port a win, because the buggers seem to trouble us every year..Thats 7 losses, but, if things go half right, I'd like to think our squad topples a couple of those. Hopefully, the 2 derbies...

Games in the balance are : Giants (canberra), Hawthorn (in Nth Antartica), Adelaide(away), and, Sydney (here). Again maybe we can get 2 of them...if not 3??

So, if any of the above ' goes to plan', well... we start approaching 15 wins or more....?!!?? ...and that puts us in quite a nice spot. Definitely in the 8, and maybe pushing top 4.!!

Importantly - if the above goes to plan in the first 6 rounds , then we are at least 4 from 6 by round 6! Ie anything less than that and we get the Drover' s dog in.......

Now....no - I haven' t found a big pile of the stuff that Jezza is on, but am fearing that 'I have completely lost it'.!!

Its either that, or, Jezza is indeed 'The 2nd Coming' ....!!

Am I completely "off my trolley", or is there good reason to go all Jezzerish about 2019???

Ahh Cletus. Been there, done that. Every year in the pre season someone starts pumping up our tyres(Jezza excluded of course as that's a given). The last two seasons I thought we had picked up some really good recruits and was pumped for the start of the season and then the truth hit hard. So this season I'm still hopeful but not talking things up and getting ahead of myself, probably because I couldn't stand another season like the last two.

Everyone will have different ideas about who we can and can't beat, but looking at your rundown there are a couple of things to point out.

Firstly us winning in Antarctica is very doubtful. In fact have we ever won a game there? Also our record away in general is not good, but in Adelaide it's terrible, against both the S.A. sides. Not so sure about us beating Essendon either. If there was one side from outside last year's top eight that would be expected to make the finals this year it would be them. They came home really strongly and were only one win out of the finals.

I do expect improvement this year. Really, it must happen or coaches must go. No more excuses.

Didnt suggest that the now traditional visit to antartica was a win....but do live in hope that one day the sun comes out down there.

But do I note that, Hawthorn is not the team it once was, particularly with Mitchell going down.

Same applies to Giants....theyve given a lot away, and really havent achieved much with what they had.

Frustrated with all the troubles the Adelaide teams give us, but not sure that neither has been travelling tremendously, nor have they recruited or drafted 'brilliantly'. Same applies to Sydney....not sure they were what they once were.

Hopefully the same applies to us. Hopefully theres not a skerrick left of the team that we have been for the past couple of years.

Still consider all the above games "in the balance", and reckon we can get 2 or more of them if we hit out straps and put it together.

Sounds like our only problem will be finding an escaped goat.

I would so love for you and Jezza to be right.

In our favour, somewhat ironically, is ye olde financial suit's cop-out that past performance is no guarantee of future results.

When Mitchell and Priddis retired from West Coast everyone wrote the team off. But Redden played his best football, Sheed came good towards the end, Yeo was very good. Their two stars Gaff and Shuey played their skins out.

They won a flag, now check the names through our midfield, which seems to be the sticking point for some. Its the equivalent. We have Fyfe and Mundy and we have the Hill brothers. And Brayshaw and Cerra and Walters. We have Blakely and Langdon.

We can do it whether we do is another thing but we can. I'm sure of that.

DS, I can not recall a time in Freo's proud history when that has been our biggest problem.

I must admit I am feeling pretty up-beat about our squad and team balance. We probably need some good crumbing forwards that put on pressure but apart from that its pretty good. I still think we will be hopefully pushing for top eight or just outside it though but you never know. I think teams on the slide will be the Hawks, Sydney and Geelong. Brisbane and us being the improvers.

You’ve got to understand that Roly’s tenure is at a knife’s edge. Also Belly’s appointment was significant in that he’s not backward in coming forward. While most on this site think that Roly is a dud, I’d suggest that he’d be headhunted in a heartbeat if and when he departs Freo.

But getting back to Cletus going all Jezzarish, 2019 was planned perfectly. The list build was strategic. The departures of both Lachies have netted us some rolled gold. In the last 2 years we had to get games into our youngsters. And in AB, I see a champion in the making. His rookie year stats sits nicely between McCrae and Oliver in their rookie years and both McCrae and Oliver had great upside in their second year. Bizkit’s thoughts are different to mine and that’s ok but both AB & AC will propel us to greatness.

I can’t see Freo playing too many debutants in 2019 unless it’s through necessity. Unlike the last couple of years, we’re batting pretty well down the order. If you consider Hoges, Lobb, Colyer, Conca in our best 22, suddenly player 23-30 includes players like Bennell, Cox, Logue, Matera, Tucker, Kersten, Duman, McCarthy, and a couple of our new draftees. Other than Cox and the draftees, the others bring 3 - 4 years of AFL experience.

The bottom 6 of our best 22 in 2019 is significantly better than in ‘17 and ‘18. This is why I’m walking around with a smile until someone goes un-Jezzarish on me.

Aaaah Jezza! 2019 was planned perfectly when LN decided to leave and not come back...........when all the decent assistant coaches ran off ( remember Kirk) and the toilet won the cup!

I'm reserving judgement on our teams chances until round 10 2020......not that i'm gun shy or anything

Well it appears from the above that Jezza suggests that the club factored in LN leaving when the restructure began (well before LN knew), that is how well the club has planned the 2018 draft.
