TOPIC: Team for 2019

It's interesting that someone in particular likes to call our midfield stars compared to the crap midfield up the road that won a premiership.

Last year we had 2 midfielders and one half back that averaged 23 or more disposals. Neale, Fyfe and Blakely. Mundy and Langdon were close to that mark.

Crap team had 5 midfielders that averaged 23 or more disposals including Redden and Sheed. Also Hurn close to the mark.

Hutchings is a tagger so would only be compared to Banfield and had a better season stats wise.

Yeti, Since Roly’s arrival, the Derby ledger is 6-7 in the Slime’s favour. Of the 7 losses, 6 of those were when we embarked on a rebuild. I still think that the Slime’s 2018 premiership success was one of the best Houdini acts in history. I’ll even bang on about the fact that the Derby wheel is about to turn.

At least now we've locked down when the rebuild started.

In pretty sure that you assured us that this year's derbies were going to be easy wins for us. How did that work out?

To be fair, there were extenuating circumstances. First Derby, we were -8. When Walters got Shepard’s whole body on his ankle, in the first quarter, end of story. Then there was the Brayshaw incident in the next Derby. Good night Irene.

Hutchings is probably the best tagger in the AFL. Yeo as a midfielder is pretty good. But we'll beat them in at least one derby next year.

Blakely will end up being the sort of bloke that Melbourne based commentators will be surprised by.

And why play Logue? I'm not sure if Roly will play him, but my argument goes like this. Logue is the sort of player who won't look that great playing for Peel. But he won't look any worse playing for Freo. He's got speed, strength and endurance to burn. Its experience he lacks. So he may as well get his experience playing in the bigs. Keep him there for a few weeks, and if he becomes a liability drop him back. Repeat until he's awesome.

Some Ifs:
If Ballas recovers his old form and looks like scoring 25 goals or more for the season play him. If early form is poor there are a number of players circling and he will in all probability be dropped.(I want to see him go out on a high)
If Bennell can hold up physically it changes the complexion of the team. His abilities are elite and having a guy like that running around centre field/half forward line removes pressure from our other mids.
If Sandi is managed well and rested for lesser games we unleash him for a finals push or a finals campaign.
If Cox is played ahead of Tabener it will not be the end of the world. As long as he has improved his mobility/endurance.
If Form is rewarded when choosing the team to play on weekends instead of playing favorites the team will evolve into one where players can be replaced with minimal disruption to team balance.
If Logue is played in the back-line he must use his physical size and speed to intimidate and dominate opposition forwards. He does not have elite kicking skills so can not afford to play like Jane, we need a few Tarzan types to smash in at contests.
I am always optimistic at this time of the year and with the list we have I am a lot more so this year. I am not getting carried away but the fact that many of our young guys have chosen to sign on for extended contracts, gives me hope that we are building toward something. I watched Richmond win a GF with team that mid season in that premiership year were looked at as a joke and a coach who looked about ready to be fired. Most pundits and experts had WCE finishing outside the eight last year and staring down the barrel of a rebuild after losing their two best ball winners in Pridis and Mitchel, missing Ntanui etc. Anything can happen and it can happen fast, thats not to say it will definitely happen this season, just that our team has turned its fortunes around before.

????????????? Houdini was an escape artist. How is winning a premiership an escape act? If it's that easy to escape with one of these bloody premierships I'm happy for us to do it.

RR, I agree about Logue, he is 1 of those players who the media and other clubs will think "why did they pick him, he is not even in Peels best 5 players?) But, he will do his job just as effectively at the next level. (The Bruce Laird of Freo if you will).

BP, Ballas will recover his best form if we play a forward structure similar to that which we played when he was in his best form. As for Bennell, throw the fitness/selection policy book out the window, and just play him. If he is good enough to contribute to our wins, keep him going, if not drop him. (This should have been done over the last couple of years, when we had huge gaps in our goalkicking options, but someones obsession with super fitness over skills got in the way)

If Logue is our Laird, can he just stop being silly and take a good look at himself and become a tear-away quick and late-order slogger?

Suker, we need a Laird for all the G Wood, K Hughes, R Marsh, D Walters and D K Lillee types in our team.

Did Bruce ever get caught on the mid wicket boundary trying too hook out of the ground? No. Did Bruce ever sky a ball over the covers trying to up the run rate? No. Did he he ever jauntily dance down the wicket to a quickie and smack it over his head? No.
Logue...listen to me mate, just take a risk, barrel a few blokes, thump it forward with a 60mt drop punt. Don't hold back...or we will call you Bruce.
