TOPIC: Team for 2019

Freo o sonearo Team for 2019 5 years 4 months ago #1

Freo o sonearo
This is one of the best media reviews of our possible line up for next year that I’ve seen. From the AFL site

www.afl.com.au/news/2018-12-15/r1-2019-who-plays-in-your-club

TEAM EXPLAINED: Settling on the best mix of talls is a challenge. In this team, Aaron Sandilands still gets the nod to lead the ruck over Sean Darcy for round one, although that should change at some point in 2019. Griffin Logue is coming back from a year ruined by injury but the former No.8 pick needs to play and slots in as a third tall defender, with Brennan Cox edging out Matt Taberner and Cam McCarthy to support boom goalkicking recruits Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb due to his versatility and upside. Stephen Hill will miss a big chunk of pre-season running after quad surgery, so isn't picked for the season-opener, and mature draftee Brett Bewley is handed a debut after impressing with his running power so far this summer.

PRE-SEASON BATTLE: There are two standout battles unfolding, one between Sandilands and understudy Darcy to lead the ruck, and another between Cox, McCarthy and Taberner in attack. If Cox is swung into defence, then he will be competing with Logue. It is the sort of competition Freo has lacked between its talls for some time. - Travis King

B: Luke Ryan, Joel Hamling, Griffin Logue
HB: Nathan Wilson, Alex Pearce, Reece Conca
C: Bradley Hill, David Mundy, Ed Langdon
HF: Michael Walters, Brennan Cox, Adam Cerra
F: Rory Lobb, Jesse Hogan, Hayden Ballantyne
Foll: Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Connor Blakely
I/C: Andrew Brayshaw, Bailey Banfield, Travis Colyer, Brett Bewley

Defender depth: Taylin Duman, Ethan Hughes, Shane Kersten, Ryan Nyhuis, Tobe Watson

Forward depth: Hugh Dixon, Brandon Matera, Cam McCarthy, Lachlan Schultz, Sam Sturt, Sam Switkowski, Matt Taberner

Midfield depth: Jason Carter, Mitch Crowden, Harley Bennell, Stefan Giro, Stephen Hill, Tom North, Darcy Tucker, Luke Valente

Ruck depth: Sean Darcy, Scott Jones, Lloyd Meek

That would be a good team but there is ever chance that team list will never be seen. I think we have 30 genuine players and a bunch more who could play good footy.

No sign of Harley Bennell in that list. It’s probably best to assume we won’t see him playing AFL again and if he does it’s just an unexpected bonus.

The name Tom North appears after his injuries. He was pretty highly spoken of when we drafted him, but was largely forgotten doing rehab last year when almost everyone under 20 was getting some games. I wonder how he's going - anyone up on the Gold Coast see him in action?

It’s interesting that he’s omitted S Hill because of pre-season injuries but named Hogan. Has Hogan been training?

The midfield depth chart isn’t great, but there is always the option of naming Nyhuis/Duman where Conca is named.

It’s a really good and even-looking list. I feel like we lack a little star-power in the middle, but if we keep our best midfielders on the park we’ll be pretty handy this year.

Pointless article. A pre-season camp in the Gold Coast will torpedo our whole season by the sound of it.

Switowski is still an unknown as a potential small forward and could give us something. I would also play Taberner ahead of Cox, and with Hogan, Lobb and Tabs up front I think McCarthy gets the nod as a smaller forward. He would want to find form pretty quickly though. I don’t buy into Cox as a defender either, he has far too many deficiencies outside of his marking. Logue over Cox easy in the back line.
As morgan points out the midfield is probably the biggest worry. That could change if Brayshaw or Cerra have a breakout season which I think there is a chance of.

Tom North looked good in the gym up on the Gold Coast, Polly. He and the rest of the squad weren't able to get out on the track as it bucketed down with rain during the whole time away. Severe thunderstorms, lightning, and flooding kept them indoors discussing tactics for 2019 and some jovial reminiscing from Roly about his playing days and time at St Kilda. A number of players fell asleep due to boredom and were punished with on the spot push ups and being forced to wear Fyfe's F7 clothing.

He is though feeling very bonded and has managed to escape a dose of the flu.

Good line-up on paper but have to shoe-horn in Duman somewhere, also Switkowski (he's really quick) for Ballas..

Yeah, these lists are a bit of fun is all. But Cox before Taberner? No way.
I know the talk from Ross was all players traded in must be first team starters and I hope he meant potentially. Let's just wait for preseason games and training form to see who actually deserves a spot...the whole 22 vying for selection. No favorites, no speculative selections...just on form.

I have to agree with others that Tabs gets a guernsey before Cox. Tabs is a better contested mark and more mobile.

So who is gonna play Moriarty this year for the Dockers. Ballas is now well tamed and I can't really see a bad ass on the list.

No question the 22 published have got talent in every line. I don’t subscribed to our midfield lacking star power. Fyfe would see that as an absolute insult. I’ll throw in a few names. Mundy ain’t over the hill yet. Blakely has proven he’s no slouch, Banfield has proven he’s a Crowley in the making. Brayshaw, averaged 16 disposals in 17 games before his appointment with the dentist. His brother, Angus, in his first year, avg 13 disposals in 21 games. Angus is now a headline act. Throw in the likes of B.Hill, Langdon or Walters, with Darcy or Sandi putting them down their throats, suddenly the machine starts to fire up. And I haven’t mentioned the likes of Cerra, Colyer and Conca. Though, I reckon the latter is better off the HB line. There’s plenty of star power if you look hard enough.

I can't see how Griffin Logue gets into the team in R1. He played 13 games in 2017 and was poor, especially compared to the first year efforts of the likes of Cerra, Brayshaw and Banfield. He was injured all of last year but is now worthy of selection? I'm not convinced.
