Freo has overhauled most of its playing list in the last few years, and at times the last couple of seasons has looked a bit confused going forward. The club has decided a week away together might fast-track the players getting to know each other and on the same page on the field. Maybe this is straying too much into corporate strategy for a footy club, but a lot of organisations do their strategy-setting meetings away from their regular workplace (I’m told for reasons other than a junket, though I’m a little dubious).

I might not have chosen the Gold Coast, but the logic of the trip away seems reasonably sound to me.

Maybe they should run these ideas past you first, Morgan, so you can explain to them why they are doing things.

I don't reckon Ross ran a quick SWAT analysis of the idea, scouted locations, considered the optimal timing or ran it by any of the players or other staff. I think he reverted to something he did in the past because he had success after doing it.

But I don't know, maybe he's lucky.

WTB, I think you've got to weigh the pros and cons, as Lyon alludes in the story.

Pros:
Dedicated time to strategy
Breaks up the monotony a bit (players hate meetings)
Good bonding

Cons:
Expensive
Adds extra travel and takes people away from their families
People on Dockerland will make fun of you

You wouldn’t do it every year, and you wouldn’t do it in 2015 while you had a pretty well-established playing group who had spent several years under the coach team. However, you might do it as a one-off in a year after when you’ve turned over most of your list in the previous off-seasons, and you feel like you’re ready to take the next step.

Cons:
You just can't stand some of the blokes but you end up being locked away with them for a week. Others feel the same about other blokes, and you, so by the end of the week you have a big bloody punchup and everyone is wanting to have a milkshake with the Brisbane coach.
