Sitting on my harvester I wondered how the Freo 2019 best 22 stacked up. I don't see enough of the other 17 teams play to know how we compare so lined them up against the 2013 GF team.

Well Steiger, I had to shut down my thresher for a moment after reading your post.

Some of the players you're positioning in the 2019 squad should be playing in other positions (such as Colyer), but I think we're looking more potent in attack, quicker on the wings and at least one full back more than the 2013 team. But there are some really smart players that we've said goodbye to back there (Duffield and Johnno - not to mention Elvis, which should be a given). My money is on the 2019 blokes - the other guys lost it after all.

Just my thoughts, gotta get back to the paddocks - got the baler rolling in before the weekend.

Thanks Polly,

I re replaced like for like where as best I could.

Agree about the "smarts" missing from the backline but the marking power up forward will balance.

The centre clearance will be a concern but hopefully seriously good contested markers at half forward will allow a quick kick rather than the traditional chain of hand passes to clear the ball.

The difference being (hopefully) is that we've now got players that can kick a goal once they've marked in the forward 50. In my view, kicking for goal lost us that 2013 GF.

But the fact remains, without Zac the Not-allowed-to-call-a-you-know-what-anymore we're going to have 18 footballers out there instead of 17.

Based on Taberner's improvement and hopefully another step forward, I would play him in same team with Lobb and Hogan (when Hogan is available).
I reckon we can play all three because they are very mobile big men.

I heard it was a bumper season PS. Don’t headers drive themselves these days? Sounds like you had a bit of time on your hands.

It’s a good exercise. I agree we are faster now, but would the 2019 team win enough ball against Sandi, Mundy, Fyfe, Barlow and Crowley all in career best form? Probably not.

It does raise the question of how you would coach that 2013 team against the 2019 team (and vice versa). You probably wouldn’t want a shootout if you were 2013, and would instead try to create a contested type of game. Would the 2019 have the wherewithal to resist that? Probably not.

2013 to win 87-72.

It's a good question - if Steiger and I weren't so busy getting the harvest in we could waffle on all day, like some office desk jockey wasting away the hours until clock-off. If you guys want bread next year keep your answers to the point.

Tough call. Another interesting question is which one of them is the first to get reported? Surely 2019 Fyfe tries to take 2013 Crowley's head off at some point.
