I don't understand a thing anyone is talking about.
2011 was of course the last standout injury year that i can recall. We were decimated. The following year, and especially 2013 we were relatively ok, apart from Ibbo and Clancee at the end. I reckon there is a lot of luck in footy regarding injury. Whether it is poor preparation or maintenance, or even individual adherence to a fitness plan...or even the dreaded incompetence of the medico/fitness staff...there is still a lot of luck involved.

Suker,

I tend to go more with the science side of things rather than luck. The luck bit covers things like collision injuries and other things that really can't be anticipated.

Repeat injuries I would see more as foreseeable and you would expect them to be planned for our planned around. When you don't do that, it's a bit of bad management.

The other thing I would comment on is the long standing joke on here about the dreaded 2 to 3 week injury. You know the one that lasts all season. Having that happen occasionally of part and parcel of the sport. Having that happen on a regular basis should lead to questions being asked.

Is it bad injury management? Bad assessment? Bad treatment? Bad environment? I really doubt that's it's only bad luck that is the issue here

No, never said it was all down to luck. A combination of all I mentioned should be considered. Who were our medicos back in 2011. Was Weber there? How was our preparation and maintenance that year? What changes happened? I guess because I am not really knowing what is going on, I need to keep a broad outlook...including luck.

You're the only person delivering dribble as usual Jezza. We give you facts and you can't verify anything except some bullsh*t about being privy to something with nothing substantiated as per usual.
Even getting back to the original post, you still haven't explained how an injured player becomes responsible for their injury and not the people treating them.
How many times have we heard you say how great Bennell will be for Fremantle. We've lost count. But now with your dribble you've just dismissed him as irrelevant and responsible for continuing to be injured.
And you don't even see or understand it! Weird.

Agreed. It's likely to be a combination when all of the cases are taken into account but I'm still of the view that management is the biggest factor.

Sports science may not be perfect yet but it's good enough to manage fitness regimes and injury management to reduce the effects a considerable amount.

It's questionable just how good we are doing the science bit when you look at our history of injury management.

Pearce, Fyfe, Hill,Bennell etc We had a success story with McPharlin but the medicos have changed since then.

It may not be a perfect science but others seem to do better at it from what I've seen

I agree, Yeti, we don't cop any more injuries than any other club, but most of the supporters are bagging the medicos for the fact that what is for most players a 2-3 week injury seems to be a 6 month injury at Freo. It has to be any or all of diagnosis, treatment, recuperation, rehab, or managing the return to playing.

I am thinking it could be the wonderful game regime ( plan ) that could make the injuries last longer , if you keep stretching something it will break .
If the players are fit at the start of the season by the end of it they should be fitter , that is if they make it that far .
Maybe you can be two fit at the start and only damage yourself after that , but I guess that the experts should know at least we all hope they do.

Hypothetically, it could be that Stephen was just trying to avoid a corkie with a porkie - check out these stories:

From looking at injury lists last year, we seemed to be a bit more prone to injury than the average but certainly not the worst. Our worst year was when we didn't have a team of adults to send to Tassie to play Hawthorn and were destroyed but then we had players back to for the finals and smashed Hawthorn.
I would suggest that one reason we get some recurring injuries is that we have not had sufficient depth of high skilled players and this meant our best players sometimes came back from injury too early. I don't think we will have that problem this coming season. We will have really good players fighting for positions.

JS, our point is that these players are not returning from injury, not that they are returning too early. The 2-3 week injury has become a standing joke. As someone pointed out above, you should be fit at the start of the season, and fitness should be maintained from then on. It should be that working on maintaining skills becomes the priority, not increasing fitness above the level of fully fit.

ps the wise old man who said the harder you practise, the luckier you get was misinterpreted by Lyon & Co.

We've made a habit on taking chances on players. Luke McPharlin was injury prone, and we got lucky there (except the last game of 2015, which we would have won if he'd played). But there have been plenty where we weren't lucky. We took a chance on Bennell, and I'm still hoping it works out - even if he just plays a good season for Peel.

The other mob took a chance on Judd, who had dodgy shoulders, and got a premiership out of it. They took a chance on Darling who had character issues, and got a premiership out of it. You've got to have some luck go your way.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to another season with Jezza being the eternal optimist, Morgan throwing in the clear thinking analysis, Yeti, RM, Bizkit et al complaining about (almost) everything, Shane getting grumpier as he waits for Old Easts to come good, and everyone else being downright entertaining. And hopefully a few carpark chats from Polly.

I've renewed my membership, and after the last few years I think the club owes me something. Winning would be good, but I'd settle for injuring a few toasters in derbies. Or outside of derbies for that matter.

Be prepared for Shane to get unbelievably grumpy!! I do think that player depth has a lot to do with repeat injuries so hopefully that chestnut wont get roasted in 2019. Players want to play...coaches want to win games....the natural response is to play footballers too early, however, I think for the first time in a loooong while we have depth front and back so maybe we will turn the corner on relying on our starting 22.

I think most people don't understand what science is, overstate what they think it is and hugely overestimate what it can deliver.
