We gave this a run after the trade period, and I thought it might be worth trying a draft version. I normally don’t have strong views about draftees never having seen them play, but perhaps there are some draft experts / enthusiasts (in addition to Bizkit) who might want to put their final real-time thoughts on the record for posterity.

The Good: While Sturt might end up being the best Freo player from this draft pool, Valente seems to me to be the best value pick. As a few people have said, sometimes you should just take the best footballer, and this guy seems like a good footballer.

The Bad: Did the club overthink things by skipping Hill with its first pick? Both Sturt and Hill are high-upside players with some question marks (Sturt’s performances are from a small sample size, and Hill has had some shoulder injuries), but I probably would have defaulted to the homegrown guy.

The Biggest Question: Who did Freo leave on the draft table to progress its trades? Freo had pick 5 going into the draft, the trading of which led to getting players like Hogan and Lobb to Freo and getting a few later picks in the door. I think the earliest we could have picked after the GC17 compo pick was pick 6 (please correct me if I’m wrong) meaning we could have taken Ben King. I think we’re in a better position for having traded that pick.

The pick you would (or wouldn’t) have made: I wouldn’t have taken two mature age players with picks 57 and 59, and would have been more inclined to try and trade one of those picks for a future pick that we might be able to use for academy purposes in the future. That’s nickel and dime stuff though.

I give our draft team 7 anchors out of 10.

I haven't really sat down and collected my thoughts on the draft till now due to life getting in the way but I will brag about being the only one to have correctly predicted the top 5 in the pre-draft thread!

I do think it's an interesting point you make about the mature agers drafted though Morgan. We've effectively only picked up 2 kids while adding a tonne of mature age talent over the off season. We're not a young side which means we need to be challenging for a premiership in 2019. Any less than that and I'd question what the club has been doing the past 3 seasons getting spanked and at the bottom of the ladder.

There's absolutely no excuses now for poor results.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Reading a Morgan review with no mention of the number of beers on tap or the quality of the steak sandwiches is very confusing.

Yeah good summary! Its obviously very hard to judge anything good or bad just yet. As a moderately informed observer, I liked the Valente pick - a solid mid with leadership attributes. The others are complete unknowns. Happy they drafted a natural fwd in Sturt - we haven't done this in the past and I think it is an area we have been seriously lacking in. Who knows though right??!! All I know is we lack fwds with goal sense, especially small fwds - hence the Ballas resigning despite the fact he hasn't fired a shot in 4 years. Our list is no potentially top 8 and that is a positive ...only time and Ross will tell.

Perhaps we can take Sydney Stack or Marlion Pickett when the in season window opens? Take a punt on some flair...double down on the Simpson, Yarren, Bennell experiment with little risk...

Great trade period, did all they could do.

I hope the players taken in the draft will be good players. I feel they will be.

How that all translates into premiership windows on the back of the carnage last year is just beyond me.

Ballas could be a very dangerous forward if we go back to a conventional structure, and he is left to play the crumber rather than the only target, (running away from the ball, at that). If he is getting the footy after having sprinted 20 meters rather than 200, his accuracy will improve. (that theory should work with the rest of our forwards as well).

There's excitement about our new draft class. Luke Valente is someone I think can make an instant impact. I think the 2 boys from Williamstown will make match committee very interesting. Its been another bonanza of quality blokes putting on the purple next year. 2019 was always going to be the year we start our climb. The fortunes of an AFL club can turn around quickly despite the previous year's shellackings. We won 8 games this year playing a few debutants and minus Fyfe and Sandi for long periods. Can't wait for the Purple Reign to be playing at Optus in 3 months time.

I'd be okay with that Jezza if you hadn't said the same thing for the two previous seasons.

We have a different idea on what quickly means.

The Good: The live pick trading to jump up to pick 30 and nab Valente was terrific. Even better, the interviews given by both Sturt and Valente showed them to be respectful and intelligent. The YouTube highlights of all four of the players we took are impressive.

The Bad: I was keen for us to take Ian Hill (although that is no slight on the guys we took, each of whom are impressive), and I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t. Worse though was the video of the conversation between Nat Fyfe and Sturt that was released by the Club - I hope that it wasn’t actually their first conversation, both because why would you take a video of that, and also because of how quickly our captain turned the screws on the kid.

The Biggest Question: Will competition for spots - particularly in the forward line - translate into a fierce preseason, or will some of those who now find themselves fighting for an opportunity wilt under the pressure?

The pick you would (or wouldn’t) have made: Everything points to Valente at 30 being the stuff of genius. Outside of Fremantle, I reckon that Conor Rozee at 5 will, in time, be seen as the best selection in the draft.

I give our draft team 9 anchors out of 10.

The Good:
Well, not sure - we didn't need anyone really, but from what I've seen Bewley is the pick of the bunch. Three of them are equally good off both feet - weve needed these types of players ever since they let Mzungu go - its been painful watching Stephen kick off the right and Matera skewing them off because he gets over excited. Who knows, but I reckon Cam Shepherd will see more of these guys than anyone.

The Bad:
We never drafted Ian Hill - to me that's stupid. When you don't need anyone you've got time to nurture talent properly so you get in talent and mold a superstar. But once again, what do I know. Yeah, I would've snagged some local talent, Indigenous players. I would've also made a bid on that Mosquito bloke. I also reckon Sturt will head out to either home or cricket within a couple of years.

Valente's eyebrows are too bushy, takes after one of those characters you see in a kid's puppet show. But that's not necessarily a problem, just needs to brush them regularly to keep them in check - maybe when he bulks up they'll be more to scale on his face. Kind of silly him talking about leadership potential all the time - I used to really dislike those knobbers when I was in school - had one bloke in my high school like that (the quarterback/captain of the grid iron team), held him down and shaved his legs when he was named as the valedictorian for the grad ceremony - I got into heaps of crap for that. Most of those types end up in the Liberal Party here. But, if Valente's head is as big as his eyebrows, I expect Ballantyne will sort him out.

Polly's Draft Score - 2 anchors outta 10 (Bewley); no Aboriginal blokes.

Hill was passed over till 24 quite a few clubs went quiet on him. Pity the fool that picks a player because he is a local when better talent was available. Time will tell we got Lobb and Macca out of GWS .
