Its been a proven formula for the VFL .....its not a national comp unless you take the home ground advantage away from Victorian clubs. They know it and everyone else knows it ( the current system ) favours Vic clubs. Soooooo...............

The best way to do that ( unfavour bit ) is to follow the NFL example.....and yes i would love to watch a GF at Optus no matter who was playing......except meth coast......and Collingwood.........maybe Gold Coast

"They should just play one game, on a Saturday afternoon, at the home of football. It's been a proven, successful formula since Federation."

Well, no actually. Since 1902. The 1901 VFL grand final was played at Lake Oval on 7 September 1901, 11 months after federation.

I used to think it should stay at the MCG, but my opinion has changed over time. Times are changing. Once sacred traditions are crumbling away. South Melbourne buggered off to Sydney. Fitzroy got the lemon. Moorabbin, Arden St and Glenferrie et al aren't used anymore. Now that there are adequate stadia in Adelaide, Perth and Sydney, the concept of rotating the GF around the country should be considered. It's not a stupid idea.

To me, this was never a serious discussion, more of a red herring to divert attention from the fact that GFs will be played at the MCG at least until 2057. While the idea of ‘sharing’ as in a best of 3 was floated as an option, it was clearly unworkable in the eyes of the AFL. Sort of like when John Howard, in the face of a majority of citizens preferring a republic instead of a constitutional monarchy engineered the constitutional convention to come up with a plan (MP-elected President) that nobody liked so he was able to say ‘see, I gave you the option of a republic, but you rejected it in favour of the constitutional monarchy.’

In this case, the better option regarding GFs would be something like the following: if two interstate teams from the same state qualify for the GF, then you play it in that state (Freo vs. Weagles at Optus, Port vs. Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, GWS vs. Sydney somewhere in NSW, etc.). Or, how about this plan: whoever qualifies highest gets the GF in their home state. Or, this one: rotate the GF to different venues, similar to the NFL/Superbowl. Obviously, all three options (I favour #1) probably have merit in the eyes of interstate fans, but it actually is a workable plan that breaks the MCG/GF monopoly and that’s something that the Vics would never agree to.* But, no, the AFL put up such as shockingly stupid and unworkable plan so that they could say ‘see, we gave you the option of playing a game away from the MCG as an option, but you rejected it as unworkable. Back to the status quo of having GFs at the MCG until the end of time.’ It’s actually become an ‘issue’ for the Vics because the stadia around the country actually rival the MCG in terms of facilities, sightlines, etc.

*The argument against having the GF at anywhere else than the MCG is purely financial according to the Vics. You can hold 100K at the MCG and hence, earn more dollars they say. But think about it like this. Say, both Freo and Weagles made it to the GF. How much money would you pay to get into Optus (non-scalpers ticket, of course) to get to the game. When Freo made the GF in 2013, my cost - doing it as cheaply as possible - came to around $2K. Hence, I’d pay at least that much for a ticket without having the hassle of travelling. I know that’s a lot of money, but the argument that the most profitable GF outcome is for a game to be played at the MCG is BS. Plus, you’d actually get Freo and Weagles fans packing out Optus rather than have MCC members or fans who bought packages from other clubs in their legalised scalping packages. (Where I was sitting at the GF, I was surrounded by footy fans, but the majority weren’t Freo or Hawks diehards).

So, Jooter it defeats the purpose of taking the GF around the country, the average supporter won't be able to afford tickets anyway. Only the rich kids get to watch it live.

Rags, sorry to say the average supporter is/was probably shut out of the GF anyways, no matter where it is. Take the MCG: Each team gets a certain number of tickets (I believe it’s around 13K to sell to its members at ‘cost’ price), the noncompeting clubs get heaps so they can bundle and sell high-priced GF packages (anyone who’s attended the famous North Melbourne Roos breakfast $250 for breakfast alone, but bundled up in some GF packages) and MCC members get dibs on the rest. These bundles are what I call legalised scalping. And, yes, only people who can afford it can make it to some events, but that's the way of the world.

Let’s say our team makes it to the GF. I doubt nonmember Freo fans get a look in for any GF tickets that are available for sale (members go into a lottery or pay for the special privilege of having a reserved ticket in case they make the GF; let’s not start that controversy again). The number available to the average supporter - regardless of whether or not they can afford it - is, well, diddly squat.

My only point in my previous post is that the AFL proposed a stupid option to effectively keep the status quo of having the GF at the MCG forever and a day. BTW, was there any consultation into the extension of the MCG stranglehold? Nope, there wasn’t. My own personal view is that they saw that other stadia around Australia could compete with the MCG for the overall ‘experience’ of the GF (e.g., in the case of two teams from the same state making the GF), and so with the blessing of Vic-based clubs. locked in the MCG ad infinitum. Moreover, there's too much money for noncompeting GF clubs to lose if they couldn't sell their packages.

So, Jooter, my hypothesis is right. The average fan can't afford to get a ticket to the GF, no matter where it is held. So saying it should be rotated to give the average fan a chance to go is all kaka, it just means fans like you won't have to fly 4 hrs each way to watch a GF.

I still reckon the highest finishing team in the GF should have the GF. I know it will not happen in my lifetime so I can piss that thought off as surplus mind vomit.
Having said that, I want us to win our first at the G...because you know what the crud-suckers up the road will say...

It is clear that teams win more games at home than away so always having the GF at the MCG does give Melbourne teams an advantage both with home ground advantage and a bigger Melbourne crowd than their interstate rivals.
While I think the top team should host the game, that because its about the money stupid then the AFL should subsidize the airfares/and or the ticket prices for interstate supporters. The bloody airlines really do rip off the supporters and so prevent many less off travelers from getting to the game.
