Good luck big fella. You were crucified by our skills coaches. May be too early for the fitness blokes but what the hell, I’m getting in early for 2019.

When your first pick is 17 - 20 history across all clubs will tell you your prospects of picking best available (which can only be measured with hindsight) aren’t great.

Think Dane Swan at pick 58 and James Hird at pick 79. Sure, the science of drafting has improved since then but you’re still assessing what 17 year olds playing against other 17 year olds will eventually become in the AFL.

There is always a choice of the best available player.

The point is that if we did miss out on Dayne Swan with a pick before 58, it's not good enough just to throw your arms up and say "Well it's a gamble this drafting caper". Get better at drafting.

While they're at it, get better at managing the list so we don't have to keep paying blokes out to get them to retire.

Good point. We sign Apeness for another year in August or September and then two months later we have to pay him out.

How do you know we had to pay him out? He would have been given the minimum of minimum contracts when he signed earlier this year and he is now walking away from that. My guess is he left with some memorabilia and a couple of high fives from his mates at best.

Well I assume he has a competent manager.

He was re-signed for 2019 just before the end of the season, so how would they not have to pay him out for next year?

I'm assuming since he retired, the club don't have to pay him out. I'd imagine there is some fairly standard clause saying something akin to "won't play, the club don't pay" but in a more legal mumbo jumbo tone ... and font ... and probably with Roman numerals.

I reckon that'd be the constitution ... the Mabo ... Justice ... law ... and the vibe.

And yeah ... definitely the vibe.

If Dayne Swan was drafted at 58 I'm guessing every club bar one missed him.

I’m afraid I didn’t ever see anything in Michael’s performance to suggest he would ever be a viable AFL player. This should have been evident to those who are paid to make observations of that kind. I seriously wonder whether any other club would have drafted him if we didn’t.

None of which, of course, reflects badly on Michael himself. Everything I’ve read and heard suggests he did his best to make it, and he’s clearly leaving under the best circumstances, giving the club an out we probably didn’t deserve.

Very best of luck in his future endeavours.

If he spoke up before the de-listings, then I wonder who would have been kept?

m.afc.com.au/news/2013-11-20/aflcomaus-phantom-draft

In the run up to the 2013 draft, twomey has Apeness going at pick 21 (4 picks later than where we ultimately drafted him) and rated him as the third best tall forward in the draft behind McCarthy and Tom Boyd (both of whom were taken before our pick).

We needed a forward, we needed one badly, and Apeness was the “best available”.

Best of luck, young Michael, and thanks for your service. Injuries are brutal and it’s a cruel game.
