Where you pick in the draft has a big influence. That run from 2010 to 2013 is especially lean pickings, but it is important to place those players in context with the players taken around them. These are the 5 players taken after each of our picks from 2010-2013. Bolded are players who are All-Australian players.

Michael Apeness (17): Luke Dunstan, Blake Acres, Jack Leslie, Jarman Impey, Darcy Gardiner
Josh Simpson (17): Brodie Grundy, Ben Kennedy, Tim Broomhead, Nathan Hrovat, Dean Towers
Tom Sheridan: (16): Clay Smith, Brad McKenzie, Elliot Kavanagh, Hayden Crozier, Brad Bootsma
Pitt (20): Jed Lamb, Cam Guthrie, Jamie Cripps, Jack Darling, Kieran Harper

So, of the players picked after our duds, you had a one in ten chance of getting a difference maker. We missed on four attempts. It’s not great, but it’s not damning. Pitt over Darling still sucks, but I thought Simpson was a good pick, Pitt and Apeness never got a real run at it, and we probably got more out of Sheridan than the clubs that picked immediately after us.

Anyway, thanks for your efforts Michael.

I was going to reply with a post making fun of Morgan but I thought 'nah, he won't bother trying to defend that trend".

I read the play poorly.

You must be in offseason form Shane because my defence (in summary 'if the next pick is sh*t you must acquit') was entirely predictable.

The only thing more predictable was a post farewelling a guy who tried hard but who had no luck devolving into shots fired at the club. Though I'm a bit surprised the fitness staff haven't copped it yet.

See, that's the sentiment I thought you'd have and then diplomatically set the tone, rather than engaging in a debate you've already had.

We’re pacing ourselves across the summer.

Fear not, the fitness staff will get their time in the spotlight.

I wonder if he will continue with footy, maybe VFL or amateurs? Or, would he go back to rugby? He looked a likely type with an aggressive streak...a pity he was getting over injuries almost continually...oh well...next please.

Fitness staff you say. How long have we had one of those?

Like Pitt, Morgan, Apeness was a gamble that never came off through no fault of his or the club. I blame the footy gods for that, not the club.

It would be interesting to compare it with the first picks of every other club over the same time frame. My guess would be that it is worst in league by a fair way but I can’t be bothered checking.

Yes Goodie. I'd like to see that but don't if there is a website that shows it.

‘First pick’ is close to a meaningless measure. I’m sure Carlton has a better strike rate than us on that count, because it’s easier consistently picking in the top 5 than in the late teens.

Hawthorn would also fare badly, because they traded their late first round picks for guys like Mitchell and O’Meara, so while Harry Morrison might be a bust for them, he’s probably decent value for a pick in the 70s.

I don't want to tell professional football administrators about professionalism bit if you're defending your position based on what someone else did then you've got the wrong mindset.

Why didn't we get the best player available every time?
