I want players striving to earn their way into the number 29 by piling on plenty of goals as big key forwards. Put the jumper to rest till a worthy successor arrives on the scene via trade or a couple of years performing in front of the big sticks. Create some history and culture behind a club legend.

IMHO there should be no limit on the number(s) you can use...
Maybe they could be your birth year like 2000 or 1995 - think of the marketing advantage plus the money the suppliers could make with all those extra numbers.

There is probably some practical reason why there are no jumpers over 50, like the changerooms only have 50 lockers and the clubs don't want to change the numbers or something. But given our lockers have keypad entry and usb ports, I feel like updating the numbers is probably something that could be done in the 21st Century.

Wearing a number over 50 means "Hey, this may be my only game but I'm going to try as best I can".

But maybe Morgan's right - maybe it has nothing to do with the jumper and everything to do with the locker. Maybe everyone has been using the #29 locker as a dirty socks dump for the past couple of seasons; maybe it's where RoLy stores his flossing sticks.
