TOPIC: Michael Apeness and Ethan Hughes

Expected to be delisted and re-rookied as per the west article below.

thewest.com.au/sport/fremantle-dockers/f...isted-ng-b881006359z

To my calculations below that will give us the space to use 4 draft picks given we delist and re rookie nyhuis as well (he has been on the rookie list 3 years so must be upgraded or re-rookied).

Number on list at start of year: 39

Out: johnson, spurr, pearce, sutcliffe sheridan, grey, neale (7)

In: Lobb, Hogan, Colyer, Conca (4)

Upgraded: Banfield and duman (2)

Demoted: Apeness and hughes (2)

Remaining on list (36)

Max list size: 40

Actually, it really doesn't make any difference to picking the 22 ...

- rookies able to play from Rd 1 (AFL removed the upgrade 'rule' for Cat A rookies this year),
- guessing contractual terms for Hughes and Apeness remain the same

Just means we'll have more active picks in main Draft than rookie Draft.

PS super annoyed at AFL for splitting main draft across 2 days this year (rd 1 is night before, Rd 2 onwards and rookie draft)

On the plus side, we won't have to miss half the drafting because they put it on the second channel so they can have a 30 minute interview with pick 12's girlfriend's cousin.

Ummmm..if they're going to delist Hughes, why would they extend his contract recently?

We currently have 38 on the primary list and 2 on rookie list (Giro and Nyhuis)
Although squad size can be up to 44, only a maximum of 40 is allowed on the primary list
As it stands, we have 4 worthwhile picks: 14, 31, 43 and 65 (next is 81)

With only 2 primary spots available, we would only be able to use 14 and 31, then we would have to draft the remaining 2 from the rookie draft, meaning we would be selecting talent overlooked in the main draft, ie our 3rd and 4th picks would be effectively around 100 or so.

Instead we temporarily delist 2 contracted players, Apeness and Hughes, who we don't think will be picked up by other clubs, and redraft them onto the rookie list.
This now gives us 4 primary spots to fill, using our 4 best picks 14, 31, 43 and 65.

If I'm right, we wont be using our next pick, currently 81 to draft a 5th player - though we may need to combine picks (say 65 and 81) to gain points to match a bid on one of our academy players (not sure how this all works).

The reason we delist contracted players is so the players are guaranteed to be relisted, otherwise we would be obligated to payout their contract.
Also, there seems to be a gentleman's agreement that clubs stay away from drafting opposition "delisted, contracted players".

Captdazza, you can only take in the number of picks to the draft that you have spots on the list. Rule was brought in a couple years ago to stop clubs loading up on late picks for points purposes.

However, banfield hasnt technically been upgraded yet so we have 5 spots on the list. Pick 81 will be used to upgrade banfield and our 4 earlier picks will be used on players. I'll be surprised if either of our academy players get bids before the rookie draft.

DL im not sure where you got that from but If you look at the picks north, collingwood and sydney have, they traded out of the first round to pick up more picks later in the draft for more points knowing their F/S or academy picks will get an early nomination. North have 6 picks in the 3rd round to pool together for tarryn thomas who will go within pick 15.

"The only change to the bidding system from 2015 to 2016 is that clubs will no longer be able to activate hidden picks.
This means that the number of picks a club holds going into the national draft must match the number of vacant spots on their primary list, with a leeway of two picks as teams must finish the off-season with a primary list of 38-40 players."

Unless the rules have changed again due to live trading on draft night then north Melbourne must have the list space.
