Midfielder picks late in the draft can produce the goods it just takes a good recruitment team to find the diamonds

If we were to start a list of great midfielders taken at pick 50 or off the rookie list it would be a long one. Likewise miss taken in the top 50 that have played bugger all footy

The same cannot be said for key forwards

Yes you can land good mids with late picks but the chances diminish as you move down the draft order. In all likelihood the chances of landing lachie neale 2.0 with a late pick are miniscule. If it was as garanteed as this article suggests or people are talking then he'd be rated in the top 5. A guy of lachie neales quality is the quality of player you aim to get via a top 5 pick. AA, leadership material, bonafide star. If its that easy to pick a player of his quality in the 50s then why is everyone scrambling to get into the top 5.

If you really want to replace Neale's ball winning then you pick up the now delisted Jarrad Lyons. The guy is an inside midfield beast in the same vein as LN and far better (and slightly younger) than Conca.

As per the article here, he was 3rd in the AFL for clearances and 9th for contested possessions. His outside game isn't as good as Neale (far better than Conca) but he has some pace and a bit more size to get it out to all of our outside runners. I'd be perfectly happy with Freo grabbing him.
