TOPIC: Cox as defender

Mark Duffield in the West has been putting Cox in the backline. Not sure if it is a god idea. He is 19 and has a lot of potential. Good or bad call?

Good call.

As always, we've got too many tall key position forwards. Cox should go back.

Actually makes a bit of sense, could out-McGovern McGovern.

Going to be a bit more emphasis on marking next year, I think we all see it coming. I reckon Melbourne will play Max Gawn a lot more forward next year, so we better have taller third men in. Cox is our best marking prospect since Polak, but we know how that went..

That's where he played and represented S.A. in the u/18s. Of course we had no forwards so thought we would try and make him into one.

If he can out McGovern McGovern, he should be playing CHF.

He's got a lot of work to do on his pointing before he can take over from Johnno.

Not only pointing, Im a big Cox fan (dont Google that) but hes slow as a wet week and turns like an MTT bus. He might be able to float in as the third man up in defence but I cant see him covering a leading forward. I see Logue doing the job before Cox in the back line. Is he as fast as McGovern - no, could he be with a few preseasons under his belt?? may be. Cox and McCarthy are the big losers of the bumper trade deal, that and about 8 of our junior ruckmen we have in storeage.

Underrated post there Corp Agarn.

Johno and McGovern aren't that quick - well maybe they're quick but pace wasn't what made them damaging and awesome footballers.

It pains me we missed him but he (McG) just has exceptional game sense and reads the play and ball off the boot better than anyone these days. He's never sprinting to contests he is just always there in the right spot and usually clunks it.

McPharlin was quick. Logue and Hamling should watch his highlight reels.

If Cox needs someone in purple to watch for inspiration go watch Antoni Grover's tapes on how to get to right spot and out mark blokes a foot taller than you.

Logue is pretty quick. He'd run rings around McGovern. And you wouldn't want to hear him thundering up behind you if you are waiting to take a mark.

I recall another young South Aussie, who came across the Nullabor and started in the backline as a 19ish year old. Turned out to be alright, Matthew someone I think his name was.

Cox is going to be a star, he may be a good utility over the journey.

Cox has good hands and will be stronger over the next year or so. Can't see Lobb, Tab, Hogan and Cox in a fwd line together. Defence may not be an option given the speed and rebound we have there. But if Hogan does push into the midfield Cox could be forward and be the backup ruckman...leaving Lobb and Tab forward as targets.

Big guys in the backline who can take marks still work.
