TOPIC: Sheridan

It's an interesting concept. If you think about it, a first round draft pick should, as a minimum, be good enough that they play a full career of football. They shouldn't be getting cut because at 24 they're not considered good enough for the league.

Perhaps in the later draft picks the people in charge are more keen to defer the decision to the people who spend all their time watching kids play football.

I'm a bit sketchy with lists and their upkeep. Are the vacant spots of Yarran and Balic being factored in or were they filled with rookies in 2018?

Shane, my working theory is that by the time you get into the 50s who you should pick becomes more obvious. There are fewer players to pick from, and thus less speculation about what might be - Clubs start to go with the guys with demonstrated football ability (possibly because the athletes are mostly gone). Players who 'everyone expected to be taken by now' but were passed over because they were 3cm too short (see, for example, Michael Walters, or Lachie Neale) become 'bargains.'

That said, the player who I like best in this upcoming draft is Connor Rozee because his athletic ability is ridiculous! In that sense, a further facet of the 'draft bargain' phenomenon is that if you gamble with your first pick, you probably go more conservative with your later picks. So I can appreciate why it is that some good footballers wind up way down the list.

Anyway, briefly on the topic at hand: for mine Tom Sheridan's awesome first-quarter goal against Adelaide in Round 12 was the highlight of our entire season this year. Whatever the future may hold for him, his effort through that passage of play and his sublime finish will be something I will remember for a long time!

It would be interesting to see some of the leagues head scout's (or whatever corporate name they give them) notes on old drafts and see how well they'd do on their own.

If the Football Manager says 'we want a 181cm Victorian midfielder who can play any position and run all day' or at Geelong 'find us a red headed full back with a Ford tattoo on his neck', then perhaps the scouts are nailing those picks, it's just that the best player fitting that description isn't a the best overall choice.
