TOPIC: Ross and his gameplan

All we are looking for is improvement , not sustained shite that we have had to put up with for the last 3 years .

We want our players to start getting better results .

Anything less than 8 wins will be a fail .

If it doesn't start happening from now on ( with the players we have now ) there is something wrong with the coach and the coaches , IMHO .

All this talk about LN leaving; I can think of about 300,000 reasons per year why he would have been tempted to go. And, given that there's really only one player per team who gets close to the 1M mark in terms of salary - and Freo has Nat Fyfe - when the opportunity knocks for that next contract, you'd be mad to not consider it. LN did, and he's off. The beauty of the situation is that we turned a two-time Doig medalist who is a smallish inside mid into two tall marking forwards - exactly what Freo needed - plus a bunch of draft picks to add to the team. Just imagine if LN was there with Hogan and Lobb. In that hypothetical, think Brissie is closer to a premiership than Freo?

As for wanting to leave, when the eventual Ross Lyon question came up, yes, you can expect a reasonably positive answer, which absent of other info, you'd have to accept at face value. Perhaps the right question might have been "are there players on the Freo team who are contracted and are on reasonable money that aren't as professional as you in terms of preparation, willingness to run,who don't lead often enough, or are hungry for the hard ball that will stymie your desire for team success?"

The irony is, our future 'best 22' puts a bunch of players on notice. If healthy, they won't see much action in the seniors. The other irony is that Dane Beams, a midfield partner-in-crime for LN unexpectedly went to Collingwood.

Collingwood and the Weagles in particular showed how to use two tallish leading forwards who work together and with the team create space for the forwards to lead into. Hopefully the days of bombing it in are fewer and far between. And that high half forward role that McCarthy can play (like J.Darling) will hopefully help Cam see his true worth to the team.

Can anyone post a comment that came directly from a player or coach that has left the club that described Lyons methods?

Pav was very positive in his book. Neale has just been positive.

Any fire anywhere, or even smoke? I can't think of any.

Interestingly no St Kilda player has ever rubbished Ross Lyon, rather they have been effusive in their praise of him and still catch up with him when he is in Melbourne to this day.

The only player I know of that wasn't totally happy with RL was Nick Suban and that was because his role was to protect Fyfe and not rack up lots of possessions, so when he did and Fyfe got ko'd by the opposition, Lyon would rip him a new one for not sticking to his role!!

I'll be honest I can't see any major difference in the way teams play. The differing thing these days is how and when you break forward.

I think a big difference is the skill levels.

Too generous for me Freo00. 12 wins at least. We've had eight wins in the last two years and if we can't improve on that with the squad we've got now, Roly/Jezza are packing their bags together.

With the squad we already have (pre draft) we should be aiming at making the prelim finals, and anything can happen from there.

Anything less than getting to the grand final should be unacceptable and the coach sacked. The 16 failed coaches every year and a few roughies can go into a coaching draft where the bottom placed team gets first pick etc.

Could be good for a a laugh and provide another draft evening for the AFL.

Wonder who would dump and who would try and keep the same bloke?

I would be very disappointed if all we could manage in 2019 is 8 wins!

We play 12 games in WA including the away derby. On top of this we then need to see what the draw throws up and hope the VaFL don't screw us yet again.

On the back of three years in the bottom 4, I think we should see two games against Blues, Suns, Saints and Dogs and one against the Lions (longest trip), then, one game each against the remainder except the eagles where we have to play two games.

On this basis we should see 5 homes games against the sides where playing twice plus the 2 eagles games, leaving 5 games at home against sides in 1 to 12, we know they've asked for the bombers in game 1 and as the Tigers, Cats, Demons and Swans didn't come here this year to play us, they might get the guernsey in 2019.

On that basis I would give us 9 home wins (splitting the derbies) and with away games against blues, Suns, Saints and dogs take it to 13. Our chances are good against Port, Crows, Roos and Hawks taking it to 17 less 2 for upsets that brings it back to 15 and a finish between 4 and 6. So that's 60% of our wins against bottom 6 teams and a few wins against slider sides in Swans, Crows and Hawks.

But the confidence in the side making the eight will stand them in good stead for a tougher draw in 2020.

Conversely, sides that had relatively easy draws like Tigers, Demons, Giants, Hawks and Pies this years will have much harder draws next year and not get so many gimme wins as they did this year like the Pies playing us twice, that was just Wack to quote my daughter!
