TOPIC: Ross and his gameplan

brayshaw8 Ross and his gameplan 5 years 6 months ago #1

Now we have a comfortable amount of strong bodied forwards, I really think Ross needs to change his gameplan for 2019 otherwise I don’t think we will go far. It’s seriously time for Ross to have a look at an attacking gamestyle and I really do think we can make the finals if he does.

Just my opinion
Thoughts?

I expect it to take a few games to work it out. So won't be surprised if we have a slow start to the season. But when he gets it working, we'll be good.

He has had 3 years to get a competitive gameplay together.
Whenever he comes against a Clarko style game plan we look poor.
He is stubborn and any coach OR player that challenges that outdated game plan Is swiftly moved out or not chosen.

'He is stubborn and any coach OR player that challenges that outdated game plan Is swiftly moved out or not chosen.' Really? Do you have some inside knowledge to back up that claim?

I can’t 5hink of any player in the last 3 or four years of player trades -especially this last ‘mammoth trade season’, where a player who has wanted out of any club - let alone Freo - has publicly stated that ‘he wants out becuse of the coach’s gameplan / coach.’

It never gets said, but surely, their must be reasons other than wanting to go home, the money, the chance of a premiership, or, the want of greater opportunity, that a player would want out of a club.

We all know this, and it would be foolish to think that in ANY club with a 40-odd group of ambitious 18-35 young men - let alone high profile sportsman - didn’t have players amongst them that did not have ‘disgruntlement’ with ‘the coach’ or ‘the gameplan’. at some point or other.

Freo is no different - no one can tell me their hasn’t been questions raised by players about gamestyle during the period of any coach in our history, let alone Ross Lyons’.

And vice versa, no coach/player manager is going to publicly chop / move on a player because ‘he didn’t like or adhere to our gameplan’

But again, don’t tell me thats not a reason why players find themselves on a trade table.

Will any of this ever be publicly stated by a player - or a coach - whilst they are currently active in the game. ? No!

But history tells us that they soon get the knives out after they leave the game. To take Freo as an example, there has been plently of comment by a lot of ex-players after they and their coach have moved out of the game. Don’t tell me that Messers Neesham, Drum, Connelly or Harvey haven’t copped flak for their styles/methods/approaches/gameplans, because whether by public comment/book/sportsmans nights etc they have.

And don’t think there’ll be similar ‘revelations’ about what the playing group ‘really thought’ after RoLy’s tenure has finished.

But, are we going to hear of any of this now? -certainly not! Its just not the way the footy industry works.

All we can say now, is that there are enough rumours and innuendo, to suggest that players who question/don’t adhere get limited opportunity or moved on.

Now, I place very little currency in rumours or innuendo - even though there is plenty of this stuff posted on DL that I love reading and pondering upon - and we have all experienced the conversation where a mate of a mate who’s brother is a mate of Players X’s sister, reckons Player X hates Coach Y,

Its all stuff that invokes interest and a comtinuation of rumours that could all be ‘fake news’.....however.......”where there is smoke, there is generally fire!”

And, lets just say, that despite all the public statements about how good a coach & bloke RoLy is, theres enough smoke around the place to suggest that Exceed doeas not need to post much evidence, Larkin.

It would be reasonable to expect a game plan to match the experience and quality of the squad you have against the opposition you are playing. I think Ross Lyon knows how to do that.
It’s a balancing act when you haven’t got all the chess pieces you need.
In 2019, we have a squad with great potential and I reckon we’ll see a lot of attacking footy...looking forward to it.

Not so much the players, but there have been assistant coaches who have been moved on/left over the defensive game plan. Sumich being the prime example.

Nat Fyfe famously went to the coach after watching the 2015 Grand Final with suggestions to change the game plan. Lyon was accomodating and Freo started the 2016 season by losing 10 consecutive matches.

I think players consider the game plan on a more micro level. As in, am I playing in my preferred position and am I in a position to be successful. On a macro level, Lyon has usually been pretty candid about when the players have told him the plan is too complicated.

Last season when we had the personnel we had plenty of blokes forward. I think that will continue, but Hogan and Lobb will held draw the ball a bit more quickly.

Where we need to improve is the transition from half back into the forward 50. Hopefully we have some combination of the Hills, Langdon and - dare I say it - Bennell available next season a bit more. I think CamMac will have a breakout year, and if we can get he and Walters with ball in hand 75m from goal we’ll be in good shape. I also like the idea of Hogan kicking to Tabs in the 50 more than the other way around.

But for the greater firepower in the forward line the game is won by winning the ball in the middle of taking it off the other team if they get it first. Our midfield looks a bit light-on, and if we lose Fyfe in the middle for any period of time we are going to get absolutely belted in the midfield. There’s no game plan that can overcome that.

This old chestnut.Ross does not have the same gameplan. If you watched the Geelong game where we got slaughtered,he did not put players behind the ball to stem the flow,he continued with a focus on attack as that is what developing young sides is all about.Good sides have good defences, good midfield’s and good forwards. Our Forwards have received a boost, our defence is solid and hopefully our midfield can deliver enough quality ball to win.If you think we still focus on defence, just look at our tackling numbers.

cletus '.however.......”where there is smoke, there is generally fire! '

I always find that justification self serving and lazy. People say all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons. Repeating rumour doesn't make it true or indicate intelligence or understanding.
