I would like to see Kelly stay where he is - missed out on their BF by half a vote in his first year and proved to be a durable midfielder with silky skills that stood out in a garage full of top shelf cars.

Weigh it up - would it be easier to draft/trade in another Tim Kelly or engage some real support for his family? Geelong should just solve the problem decisively irrespective of anything else - it's not hard. Forget hauling the family over to paper over the crack, there are trained professionals that can solve the difficulties and help set the family on a course that will benefit them all for life.

I'd be interested to know whether any approach was made for additional support from the club for TK's young family, especially from his manager. If I were Geelong, I'd be pretty pissed if a public spray in the press was the first I heard about it.

A plausible scenario:

Everyone at the club - "Hey Timbo, loved your game Saturday. How are you doing?"
TK - "pretty good thanks mate. Loving my footy"
EATC - "How's the fam? Settling in well?"
TK - "going alright mate. The kids are so f'n cute"
EATC - "Awesome man!"
TK's manager - *crickets*

Seriously, you're worried about a football club's feelings. This is the actual scenario.

Woman: Please help me I am not coping.

Yes, good on her for putting her hand up - she was probably at her wits end to do so. Identifying the difficulties are the hard part, solving them isn't. Where's the problem with this?

Geelong's weather may be pretty crappy, but you've got this thing called central heating. Simple. Tim not finding enough of the ball during a game would lead to a blizzard of professional help - not so simple. A mother struggling with three little tackers isn't unsolvable or unique. Just solve it, moving to the Slime isn't a sane solution. I would rather die than pull on one of those jumpers.

Not enough attention is being paid to the Weagles in this failed transaction. The player was crying out to be traded. Geelong was more than happy to entertain a trade. The Weagles should have come to the party a bit more - what was being talked about on various sites was that Geelong would be happy with pick plus a player they identified (Brander). Weagles said no way is Brander being traded, and apparently that's where it ended since they thought he's gettable next year at a lower cost. When a trade doesn't happen, there's enough 'blame' to go around, I just don't think enough has gone to the Weagles. Surely TK recognises this.

In a nutshell from an Eagles perspective Kelly's family was not worth a first round future pick.
From Kelly's point of view obviously Freo is a worse place to be for his family than Geelong.

Yeah, DJKL, I did. Sorry, been watching NBL basketball and that idiot, Dwayne Russell is commentating that. Doing my bloody head in, he is.

As stated in another thread, it's a harsh system. But players aren't conscripted, they exercise free choice to give it a go. If they're confronted by unforeseen consequences, they should maybe remind themselves of the wise words of Mark Knopfler:
"The bed that you make
That's the one you gotta lie on
When you point your finger
cos your plan fell through
You got three more fingers pointing back at you
"

You think Knopfler's advice misplaced? I wasn't intending to sound harsh or judgemental.
I don't for one minute think Ms Kelly doesn't need or deserve some assistance.
But - I see 2 ways of seeking support, Shane.
Approach the employers and say "I need help. This is what I need"
or
Approach a newspaper and say "Why is no one helping me?".

To clarify, I don't want in any way to seem dismissive of Ma Kelly's situation, nor the way she's gone about it. And my fictitious conversation was just highlighting the possibility that TK himself may not feel like "making a fuss" around the club. Young men, and pride, and all that.

My scorn is reserved for the player manager, whose job it is to advocate for the health and safety of his client and his client's family.

I'd assume player managers are only interested in their clients during trade or contract times and forget about them the rest of the year.

Well I don't think Kelly and his family are in dire straits, even if they are so far away. It's the walk of life he's chosen and I'm sure there are brothers in arms he can call on for help. No one is saying he is getting money for nothing and I'm sure he is still a local hero to some. Why worry I guess and it's not like he has industrial disease..! He's probably twisting by the pool as we speak.
