I don't think anyone wants to see pretty footy - we want attacking, take the game, skilful....yeah skilful, smart football. And keeping the foot on the throat when you get them down. I want my team to play that type of game. Odds are you'd win more than you lose but you'd tolerate losses more. Apart from a few games in the past few years, we've been pretty
horrid. Shirley, Jezza, you'd wanna watch that? Shirley?

Listing a bigger number of debutants means nothing if they're rubbish footballers who aren't going to amount to much. The Lions debuted quality players who had an impact. I can't say the same of Jones, Switkowski, Giro and Crowden
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

A little unfair, I think, BK. Switkowski definitely showed a lot of genuine promise and will only improve with a full pre-season and regular games. Giro and Crowden are young kids both with huge potential. Jones, maybe, is one of those blokes (a bit like Sutcliffe) who are too good for the WAFL but lack the something that translates into equally good AFL players.

It might have come across harsher than I intended. I don't see a high ceiling on any of those players abilities with clear problems in their game where as a lot of the Lions kids who debuted showed a lot of potential with loess support and carry from more mature players.

Switkowski I'd like to see more of but doesn't have the pace I'd like to see in a small forward or the composure. I do like his pressure and he has a little time to improve and adjust to the AFL.

Jones I saw enough to know he is not going to deliver much more than he already has.

Giro is very small and pretty poor by foot. A lot will have to go well for him to be anything more than Sutcliffe was for us. Luckily he is young and has plenty of opportunity to develop his skills.

Crowden is small but solid so I don't see a lot of development in his physical abilities. His disposal is ok and speed is ok. He looks to be in a similar mould to Dutchy and Grey, an in and under player who should be tough to move off the ball. He probably has the most potential to be an AFL player out of those listed. I'd hope we get some better midfielders in to support Cera and Brayshaw though.

Never actually seen Jones do that much at WAFL level either.

The Lions debuted Rayner, Bailey, Eagles, McInerney, Starcevich. Of the 5, Rayner is the standout. Not sure how you think the other 4 showed anymore than Cerra, Brayshaw, Banfield, Crowden, Giro etc. Perhaps you're not giving our kids the credit they deserved, Bizkit. Rayner is the No. 1 pick. But I reckon Brayshaw, Cerra and Banfield, had better debut season than Rayner. A few stats to show their 2018 performances. Looking at the numbers that matter, I rate our boys in purple as having more upside if their 2018 performances are to go by. The 3 Freo boys I've mentioned will be in our best 22 for many years to come. Other than Rayner, the other 4 Brissie debutants are questionable starting 22.

Pick 1, Rayner (22 Games) 13.5 Disposals, 0.91 Goals, 2.36 Tackles
Pick 15, Bailey (12 Games) 13.5 Disposals, 0.5 Goals, 2.33 Tackles

Pick 2, Brayshaw (17 Games), 15.94 Disposals, 0.29 Goals, 4.41 Tackles
Pick 5, Cerra (21 Games), 13.67 Disposals, 0.33 Goals, 3.38 Tackles
Pick 5, rookie, Banfield (20 Games), 14.55 Disposals, 0.25 Goals, 4.05 Tackles

Good comparisons although a lot of people here were calling for Starcevich to be included as part of the Neale deal, so he must be pretty highly regarded.

Rayner played as a forward hence he kicked as many goals as our three combined. To get 13 disposals per game as a forward is very good. Banfield and Brayshaw both played in the middle. So 13 disposals it not that great, their tackle count was awesome though.
I think you need to look at their 2nd year players as well though, McLuggage was fantastic and Hipwood has the makings of a great leading forward.

It wasn't just their debutants I was talking about although I did like the look of McInerny who showed plenty up forward and as an aerial threat along with Starcevich. I was talking about kids like Mcluggage, Berry and Witherden, We haven't had as much depth of talent in our kids as they've picked up with most positions being filled by more mature players we've traded for or drafted.

They finished one spot below us on the ladder while relying on those young players to win them matches. We rely very heavily on the Fyfe's, Mundy's, Walter's and Neale's to get us our wins. That's going to have to change this year and our kids are going to have to have a much bigger impact.

Our young players the past season looked good in their first few games, when they were taking the game on and playing as they had been taught from U/6's, but as they became indoctrinated, their confusion led to more and more mistakes.

Inspired by Lachie Neale I decided to let the missus know that I wouldn't be renewing our contract next year...

She was displeased with this news and told me that I was "a required player"...

and if I wanted to remain on the "big stage" I needed to think long and hard...

and in the meantime I'm in the "dog house"...

then she went on to mutter something about the "off season"!!!

We never had an "off season" before...

Nice one Lachie.

I reckon we've actually had a lot of off seasons, mostly during the real seasons and especially the last three seasons.

What lead to more mistakes is injuries to a senior players exposing our kids and fatigue due to their body's not being ready for afl.
