If Rosich is such a horse trading genius, why haven't these sorts of deals happened over the last 6 years?. 1 factor changed this year, some one came in and made decisions instead of chasing dreams. Good onya Belly. Still getting the hard ball while others are trying the fancy tap ons and pretty stuff.

I would have thought our trading over the last few years has been good.
The deal brokered for Mayne was very good. Anybody that argues because of this years form we got dudded on this should go back and check their posts.
Hamling, Wilson, Matera and Kersten all secured by the club for very little. Before anybody jumps down my throat about Matera remember at the start of this year Buckley was trying to get Mayne off the books.
Bennell brought in. Admittedly hasn’t panned put but I can’t remember too many being upset at the time. I was genuinely excited as were most on here.
Lachie Weller deal last year snared us Brayshaw.
McCarthy secured from GWS it got ugly but clearly somebody lit the fire inside of him enough that he was willing to sit out of footy entirely to make sure he got to Freo. I know he hasn’t set the world on fire. I have been one of his harshest critics but with the addition of Lobb and Hogan, he could very well begin to shine on the third or fourth defender.
In short of all the things not working recently recruiting has been sound. None of this is meant to criticise Peter Bell, I am sure he will do a good job, its just that I think recruiting is not done enough n a couple of weeks but over years.
In three drafts they have identified the players they think are gettable and useful and acquired them for reasonable value while not letting to many go without being fairly compensated.
The recruiters have secured a list that looks balanced even exciting across all lines it’s now up to the coaches, fitness staff and players themselves to do the rest. I have long held the belief that talent identification, ie a teams ability to identify gems low in the draft, has more to with how they are developed than genius talent spotting.

There was no deal brokered for Mayne, he signed a deal with Collingwood as a free agent and we were given a compensation pick.

Well his exit from the club with a good result for both the player and the cub was handled well then. I felt at the time and posted that this was well engineered by both player and club.
I believe recruiting departments don’t just come up with ideas at random and then go let’s go get these deals done. They are ongoingly in conversations with player managers and in turn other clubs measuring the interest in their playing group and then assessing that worth against what we will receive in return.
In the Mayne “deal”we received pick 23 in compensation. Net result we got a good outcome for club and player. I am sure we could have offered somewhere in the vicinity of the deal and retained him.
The point is they seem to have had a vision and delivered on that vision.

Not sure that Tommy or Cam Sut will even be on our list.I think Tommy went OK this year and Cam Sut had spent time in the gym so that he was not pushed off the ball so easily. It is a sign of a healthy list.

Good idea Morgan, we can trot this out when the revisionism hits in a few years time.

For posterity I will state:
1) I give Bell 11 anchors out of 10, he couldnt have done better. Rosich and Lyon for whatever their parts in this, full accolades too. If we are goin to bag them incessantly, lets give them accolades when they do good. To convert picks 5 and 6 into Colyer, Concha, Hogan, Lobb and pick 14 etc was brilliant.

2) I will also go on record right now that Lobb and Hogan will be better and have better careers than picks 5 and 6. Its a statistical probability that two known stars will be better than two possible stars.

3) I see the semblance of a plan. The focus on WA boys McCarthy, Matera, Hamling, Brad Hill, Hogan, Concha, Lobb, Colyer I LOVE. In an era where there seems to be no loyalty and players are traded like cattle this warms my heart and gives me some pride back. We seem to be the main club that started this focus although I see the South Australian clubs seem to be following suit now. Whilst Brayshaw and Cerra broke that mold, overall this focus on our WA lads has helped heal some of the disappointment of losing some other aspects of our identity over the last few years.

4) I have been a big advocate for two rucks and not using your centre half forward to help out in the ruck, especially when you have no forwards to begin with. The recruitment of Lobb is not only good talent wise but will be transformative in how we set up in the forward line. It should allow a seamless transition for Hodor to take over from Sandi throughout next year, with Lobb being the support act and creating mayhem when resting forward. Tabs and Hogan stationed permanently forward will be a sight for sore eyes.

5) Curtains:
for Roly: if Roly cant maintain a forward structure and coach proper leading patterns with Lobb, Tabs and Hogan iin the side then this will be telling. Ive given him the smallest remaining benefit of the doubt because we`ve only had crabs forward of the play. Now that excuse has gone and players should have confidence to go fast and direct to leading targets. Similarly if he does something stupid like play only one ruckman now they`ve recuited Lobb, then its curtains. And make no mistake, Bell will act if the problem is Roly.

6) Prediction: a) Bell will be just what we needed. He wont be everyones cup of tea but by the end of next year, even the Vics will respect him. There will be more articles painting him with Yoda ears or similar. b) we get Ian Hill and I agree with this. The fact he is a cousin of Brad and Stephen should be a factor and I welcome that sentiment. I think Bell will bring the sentiment back and its important.

7) Hope: I hope the medical staff get kicked out if we once again suffer another year ruined by soft tissue injuries.
