TOPIC: For Posterity – 2018 Trade Period Edition

I'll save ink by saying I agree with Morgan's first post.
Plus...
Much will ride on Hogan's recovery from injury and how much "due diligence" went into that.
I'm all for a bird in the hand. While having a pick in the top 8 would be nice there remains a greater element of luck and uncertainty in that pick than getting someone who has already demonstrated that they genuinely have what it takes at the top level. I'd happily give up 2 untried immature first round picks in exchange for one known A grader.

Well done Morgan - many hindsight experts. Maybe me included.

The Good: Hogan, trading back into the draft.

The Bad: Sad to see Lachie go and he is / will be a huge loss. But I don't think they could have prevented it. Ross is still the coach.

The Biggest Question: Due diligence. Was it sufficient on Hogan's foot? If this turns out to be no, then this trade period could all go to bust.

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): Deal, on the basis that he didn't cost us anything and we need some older heads in the squad. However, this guy is fair to meddling at best. Watched him spray too many kicks in the prelim and he reminds me of Pearce. I think he will cop heat on this board however I can see the value he adds to the squad.
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Yes, yes and yes and I would have thrown in next years first round selection (i.e. they did well to get Hogan for what they did)
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Technically, yes. He was on the way out the door anyway. When faced with the conundrum of do you make him play the last year of the contract or do you let him go and secure the draft picks and pick up Hogan, the answer has to be "deal". But he is a very very big loss
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: No deal. I think this guy won't produce much more than we got from say Hendrix when he rested in the forward line. I think Tabs offers more as a lead up CHF style player.

Also Colyer - never seen the guy play. But came pretty cheap. So "deal".

Overall: 10/10 anchors for Bell.

Traded back in the draft, lost Lachie who was out the door anyway, but managed to bring in some other talent.

The Good: Hogan finally here, and wrapped to see Rory here with him, still not happy we couldn't get Hogan and Schultz here about 5 years ago.

The Bad: Idiots in the media during the trade period, just doing their usual stuff, but jeez they were more than a little harsh on Freo. Also ridiculous statements like "no one will want to trade with Freo in the future" - I think it was Jay Clark or that moron Jon Ralph who came up with that. Give me a break. Also Lachie was a favourite of mine, and probably all Freo fans - now he's just a little twerp.

The Big Question: There were some promising signs last season from some of our younger players - a few of them might get squeezed out if we're close to full strength - Like that's gonna happen, right? T-Bone might get squeezed out as well, or he might just step right up and make a name for himself.

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): Deal - I reckon he'll slot straight in and surprise a lot of people - Richmond will be asking themselves why they let this bloke go.
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Deal - Very Big Deal.
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Deal - Rack off you little twerp.
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: Deal - Now take the mark, and kick the goal.

In summary - The best thing to happen over the last couple of weeks - Kilgore Trout is back posting on Dockerland.

Overall: 11/10 anchors for Bell.

I generally like Herr Vonnegut's work here, but there's more to a limerick than the rhyme scheme. Attempting scansion on it was frightful.

Like trying to dance to a ride-on lawnmower crossing a rail siding diagonally.

Don't get me started on Kurt. He's my number one word writing guy. Although, pursuant to your moniker, Joe Heller gets a serious look in.

[When Vonnegut tells his wife he's going out to buy an envelope] "Oh, she says, well, you're not a poor man. You know, why don't you go online and buy a hundred envelopes and put them in the closet? And so I pretend not to hear her. And go out to get an envelope because I'm going to have a hell of a good time in the process of buying one envelope. I meet a lot of people. And, see some great looking babes. And a fire engine goes by. And I give them the thumbs up. And, and ask a woman what kind of dog that is. And, and I don't know... The moral of the story is, is we're here on Earth to fart around."

I very much agree with Larkin, some of this fell into their lap. I don't wan't to sound ungrateful or negative but Port were very keen to trade down to get access to the Sth Australian talent so they paid a premium, Hogan was ready to come home and Melbourne were ready to let him go with May wanting in.........ditto Lobb....having said that we played it well.

They didn't deserve the harsh criticism I leveled at them early in the trade period, but I am not too sure they are all geniuses now.

In any case, there's a hell of a football team waiting to get out on the park in 2019. Go Dockers!

Heller? I remember reading Catch 22 lying on my bed in the middle of the night laughing my head off.
And over the years I endured the rest of his books, always hoping that somehow he'd re-create the magic - but he never did.
Come to think about it, I'm sure we've had footy players like that.

We’ve had ‘big’ names ready & waiting to come to Freo in the past and landed none. Belly’s so new he’s still waiting for the name plaque on his office door - but managed to land 2 within an hour.

The fact the careers of those other ‘big’ names, like Clarke & Cloke, never reached the same heights as before rejecting us prob kept Bond & Lloyd in their jobs an extra couple of years.

Talk of how this trade bonanza “fell into their laps” is complete rubbish. There were plenty of other teams that could’ve traded picks with Port to improve their draft position but Belly & Steve got the deal done first - plus got us the equivalent of pick 20 for free in the process.

Unfortunately, there are those have an entrenched, dare I say pathological, view that everything about Freo is “glass half-empty”.

It must be wearing thinking your team can never do anything right - especially after the last 2 weeks where they pretty much did everything right and then some!

It seems giving credit where credit is due is impossible for some.

Oh well, keep this up and that throbbing behind the eye will turn into a full blown aneurism should the team start winning regularly again.

Who was going to trade with Poet as we did, Jason.? All other clubs with earlier draft picks than us had decent picks in 2nd, 3rd and 4th round.

You're starstruck.

Docker by the Sea For Posterity – 2018 Trade Period Edition 5 years 6 months ago #55

Docker by the Sea
2015 finish top of the ladder although faltering.
2016 the club makes the decision to reboot with essentially the same list and falls horribly short announces rebuild and begins cutting players.
2017 another ugly year further players cut for around 30 players turned over. Retains high picks and goes to the draft.
2018 still only 8 wins too many ugly losses but pulls off probably best ever trade period.
Three drafts and I believe we may very well have the makings of a very competitive team.

In short, we have a freshness about the squad. The new season is unbearably far away. If the likes of tommy or cam sut get picked before youth...then we have not learnt anything.
Breakfast of Champions...always worth a re-read.
