I didn't knock Lobb's contested marking, it's the main thing he does. I don't think he gets near the football enough or impacts games too much. He seems to get lost on the field a fair bit and at 26, should be on top of his game.

He isn't competing against Sandi or Darcy either as he's been talked up as a forward. That means he is competing against Tabs, Cox and Apeness. Tabs is the same age and a better mark and mover while not being as capable in the ruck. Cox is 6 years younger and a better mark with far better game sense and knowledge, he's a natural footballer. Apeness is 2yrs younger and injury prone but when he's gotten on the park he has very good game sense and attack on the footy. I really like his marking and think he'd be comparable to Lobb in that sense if he was fit. Unfortunately that's a big if.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Sorry Morgan but I'm a non-conformist (part of growing up in the 60's I guess) so won't be using your pro-forma. However, I would like to make a few points-

i) the word "Trade" by definition means you have to give up something to get something. I don't accept losing Neale and our top draft position is a negative. It's the cost of doing business.

ii) saying Bell looks like a goose for walking away from the Hogan negotiation is completely wrong. Walking away is part of a negotiation process. For example, it happens every day on the streets of Kuta. Bell executed it perfectly and got his desired result.

iii) if reports were right (a big if considering) and Hogan asked for 8 years, we dun real good!

iv) I think Lobb is a major get. While his form wasn't A grade with GWS, there are probably mitigating factors and now that he is home he will really improve (I hope). I was at the G when Collingwood beat GWS in the recent final and remember Lobb clunking 2 contested marks right in front of me that made me realise this boy could be anything. So much potential.

v) Belly is a far more capable person than his predecessor.

Ok, I'm finally home to respond.

The Good:

Getting Hogan and not paying the world for him like Melbourne clearly expected
Getting Lobb is kinda good
Trading in picks in multiple rounds was also good

The Bad

Losing Neale. One of our best on field leaders and a huge ball magnet. Losing him is a bigger deal than most on here have given credit. I'm not sure if there was anything Bell could have done to change that but its done and its a negative.

The biggest question?

Will we change to way we do things to get the best value of our new acquisitions. I certainly hope we do.

Deal or no deal

i. Reece Conca (for three years): Probably not but he didn't cost us any picks so its worth a punt I suppose
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Yes
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Yes reluctantly
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: Probably not but that said, he gives us depth in ruck stocks and forward stocks, so again maybe worth a punt. I would have offered less for him.

8/10 anchors for Bell I think. In spite of the ridiculous pressure put him by the Vic media and AFL if things are to be believed, he managed things particularly well and i doubt many could have done better, if as well.

Hypen,

in answer to your question about retaining the early picks, yes its worth while asking that question.

I see it as a risk / reward situation. Yes, you might pick up another Pavlich early in the draft, assuming he was still there when our first pick came around. You could also pick up another Morabito.

Doing the trading that we did got us players we needed structurally and we have a fair idea what they bring to the table. We also have currency in later rounds to bring in other local talent, like Hill and Garlett.

I think when you weigh up what we did do over what might have been, you can't really complain about the choices made. They are at worst, completely defensible and at best, could be huge for us. I think, at this point in time, they made the right choice

The Good:We got Hogan and didn't pay overs. We started the trade period with pick 5 and pick 80 odd and finished with Hogan, Conca, Lobb, Colyer and a better spread of draft pick. The best trade was the one with Port that got us heaps of picks for pick 5.

The Bad:The negativity from the media

The Biggest Question:How big a goose are Hackdorn and Hardi, the biggest comedy double act since Morcambe and Wise

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years):Deal, we got him for nothing and he adds depth with Neale gone
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23:Good trade we paid his worth
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Who? he is dead to me. We got his worth
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19:I think he will be useful, he gives us a big man in the forward line, if he doesn't get sucked up the field we have a target in the 50 and he will feed Walters, Ballas, Matera and MCCarthy with lots of crumbs

Overall: 8/10 anchors for Bell.

DB 4 PM
The Good:
We have used the trade period to complete a list on paper that should be able to challenge deep into the finals for the next 2-3 years while Fyfe, Walters, Mundy and the Hills are still valuable. Assuming few Injuries, decent coaching and a slice of luck - Clive willing of course. High draft picks this year would very likely have given us future champs, but we still wouldn’t have had a forward line and by the time they hit their peak, the rest of our best would be past it. I think we have to make our move now.

The Bad:

Media chumps, Tim Kelly and his manager

The Biggest Question:

Can we get our best 22 blokes fit and playing most games next season? Not just Hogan, but the Hills, Conca, Lobb, Fyfe etc.

If we do, Ross has no excuses, we can (and must) go deep into finals.

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): Deal, assuming reasonable $
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Deal
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Deal, given money grubbing Brisbane loving midget wouldn’t change his mind
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: Deal, paid too much, dunno why pick 19 alone couldn’t do it but worth it to plan for life after Sandilands and add extra bow to Fwd. sometimes have to give a little than the ideal.

Overall: 9/10 anchors for Bell.

I don’t like typing so will just say, if the WC won a GF with that bunch of crabs, just look at our list and it’s talent and upside and it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to say good things happened on Wednesday and bring on 2019.

10/10 to Belly

Well done Bond last year too for snaring Cerra and Brayshaw.

I give the club 9/10. I refuse to rate Bell for another couple of years, these things don’t get put together over two weeks. Did anybody else notice that a lot of the big names were from the same management group. My opinion is, a big chunk of this was formulated between their player managers and club officials well before trade period kicked off.
I was seriously concerned going into this draft with 6 & 81 how we were going to improve our list. Well it got done.
Hogan as long as his contract is not the 8 million over 8 years is a no brainer.(deal)
Lobb I am a fan of and unlike others don’t think we have paid overs.(deal)
Conca a free hit and was getting a game in a much better team than ours.(deal)
Colyer I am not phased about but he is quick apparently. Matera and Ballantyne aren’t.(deal)
To be left with a first and second round pick is a phenomenal result. I could be wrong but I don’t think there are any West Aussie players in the top ten. The go home factor is real and clubs are pressing it hard. We may be able to keep interstate players but how inflated are their salaries going to be and the risk is higher.
I don’t like that we lost Neale, I love the way he plays and what he brought to the club. Short of offering up Fyfe or perhaps Walters we wouldn’t have got Hogan. If anybody thinks differently please feel free to outline how this could have happened.
Well done by the club and Bell as the figure head. Now that it is all over none of it counts for jack unless we can improve dramatically on the last couple of years.

I read an article somewhere, perhaps the Age outlining how the mega trade supposedly panned out with Rosich ringing the management group asking them to help out on Monday and all
parties working from there to make it happen. Freo apparently never took the Hogan deal off the table, just turned away from Melbourne’s demands.

Whatever we think of Rosich’s other dealings, he seems to be a decent footy operator and Bell adds some steel to the footy management side.

I reckon they deserve a solid 10 for the way they ran this trade period. They’d lost Neale and turned that into several positives. That’s just impressive any way you look at it.

How it all works out is another matter but they’ve given the club a better chance than anyone could have expected a week or so back.

No pro forma sorry Morgan. On the phone and lazy.

I won't break down my overall rating, but just say that it feels really good what Bell's done at this trade. It gives me great hope. Finally we have a forward line and I think everyone collectively is just going to get better under RTB.

... and for the Dockerland pre/post game pissups. I'd say we need t-shirts with our Dockerland username on front and back. Big fonts.

Mr. Smiley, here is the article. It is a good one.
www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/how-the-mega...20181017-p50aar.html

The Good: Trading in the two bigs, getting way more draft picks higher than 80. Belly and Rosich and the Freo team done good.
The Bad: Losing Neale and Pick 6 - but they made everything else happen, got to give something to get something.

The Biggest Question:
1) Will bringing in experience young talent create immediate success (next 24 months), over getting 1-2 players in a super draft and waiting longer?
2) Does scoring/wins improve radically from the investment from 2019?

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca - deal, cheap
ii. Jesse Hogan - absolute deal, must have
iii. Lachie Neale + picks - made everything else happen, deal
iv. Rory Lobb - will be very good, better than most expect. Deal.

Overall: 9.5/10 anchors for Bell.

I think I’ve made enough comments on the trade approach and outcomes in other topics to be able to refer back to in time. I think I held a fairly consistent line, with the odd tangent, but that’s for others to decide.

However, from a general overview perspective, we effectively took our pick 6 and LN and turned that into Hogan, Lobb, Conca and Colyer and pick 14 - with some other pick swaps amongst it. 10/10 for that alone!

Colyer, unlike a few other FA/late pick ‘smokies’ ergo Sylvia & Matera, has genuine pace - something we lack forward of centre.

Still to be seen which players on our list have to make way for the incoming draft picks - but that’s footy.

My one prediction is that Belly will be still at the club when the first Freo flag is won. He knows his stuff, has a hard edge we’ve lacked and will ensure the talented group we have now is coached to bring out their best. Whether that is Roly or someone else - time will tell.

Bell and Rosich were gifted circumstances. Roly has now been gifted what looks like quality players. I think its now reasonable that we expect more wins than losses and a decent shot at finals.
