The old saying is that hindsight is 20/20, but hindsight in footy discussions I would say is at least 20/15. Not only do fans recognise bad decisions made by the club with the benefit of time, they often insist they knew in real-time that the club was making a mistake.

We’ve just come out of what shapes to be one of the more important trade periods in Freo’s history, for better or worse. In future years we’ll know how this all panned out, but I thought it would be interesting to record our reactions in real-time for posterity, so that when in the future some smart-arse like me says ‘yeah, but everyone loved the trades when they happened’ you can say ‘well, back in your box, I thought the [insert] trade was rubbish – here’s the link’

[To cut and paste]

The Good:

The Bad:

The Biggest Question:

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years):
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23:
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30:
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19:

Overall: /10 anchors for Bell.

My thoughts…..

The Good: I’m stoked we got Jesse at a reasonable price. It gladdens my heart to get a Claremont kid who wore a Freo scarf to the 2013 Grand Final in the team, and that is enough to assuage my concerns about his foot and extracurriculars for now. Let’s hope being home and settled leads to his best football. I really think his combination of skills and swagger will unlock our forward line, and I can’t wait to see him run out in purple, hopefully with #29 on his back, and hopefully as close as possible to round 1.

The Bad: I don’t think there is too much bad, although the decision to give Colyer a three-year contract seems baffling to me. He likely won’t cost us a lot, but if D Pearce’s three-year contract caused some angst on Dockerland, can you imagine if Colyer doesn’t become a regular and some likely young types are delisted while he still cashes cheques? Whoa boy! All that said, looking at our forward line we could use some genuine pace, so I hope he can make his mark.

The Big Question: There are a few big questions, including about Hogan’s health and how we replace Neale’s output in the middle, but the big question for me is whether Rory Lobb makes his trade worth it? According to the draft points index we didn’t give up much to get Lobb, but with a few good WA kids likely to land in that 10-20 draft zone, I can’t help but feel having two swings instead of one there would have been nice. Lobb is a very good player, and he and Darcy could be an elite ruck combo for the next 5-7 years, but as unfathomable as it sounds, we may be a little top-heavy in the forward line.

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): Deal
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Deal
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Deal
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: No Deal

Overall: 8/10 anchors for Bell.

I thought it was a strong first-up showing for Bell despite questionable qualifications for their role. How all this plays out will depend a bit on the draft, but I think we came away with some very good additions to our team, some good picks still in the draft, and a full hand of picks next year.

The Good: We aquired two gifted players who address deficiencies in our squad, and also two other players who were first-22 selections in what were very good teams last season. We went from having a terrible set of draft selections to having one in each round, which I think demonstrates a realisation within the Club that - no matter what else is going on - it is important to pick four new players every year, and not just at the end of the draft after everyone else has had a go. We didn't demonstrate wilful disrespect for our own players (like Hawthorn and Port Adelaide), or for other clubs (like Hawthorn and Port Adelaide). All of our trades were reasonable. Peter Bell represented the Club exceptionally well - he was impressive every time he spoke. Behind the scenes, Steve Rosich also did a good job.

The Bad: We lost Lachie Neale.

The Biggest Question: How soon in 2019 we can look forward to seeing Jesse Hogan in purple.

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): Deal.
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Deal.
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Deal.
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: Deal.

Overall: 10/10 anchors for Bell.

The Good: Hoges.

The Bad: Length of contracts for Conca and Colyer

The Biggest Question: Hedge between Hoges' foot and Rory's form - he's not been champagne lately. Not even very sparkling. We've seen what he can do though, and it's pretty great.

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): Reluctant deal, only because we lost Cowboy.
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: Deal.
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: Deal.
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: Deal, but a bit of a scrotum-tightener.

Overall: 8.5/10 anchors for Bell.

May history judge me fairly.

Mike, I'm glad someone had a crack. I thought it would be a good exercise for people to record their thoughts, but I was beginning to wonder whether people were too scared to post a real-time opinion lest it make it harder for them to complain later.

I was just about to try and track down Shane's bok-bok-bok Lyon GIF.

CA, I don't need too many invitations to head to DTC (or any pub). As an aside, one of these days someone should organise a pre-game Dockerland event.

The Good: getting Hoges in and not selling the farm to get him is great. Watching the way Wilson, as someone who bleeds purple, attacks the game makes me excited to see a fanboy like Hogan pull on the purple. Great to see us end up with a pick in every round of draft, having come in with 6 and squat.

The Bad: losing a pick in the top 8 hurts. There’s some game team changing talent up there. And losing Neae hurts even more. Not Bell’s fault, he wanted to move, but he’s a genuine champion of the competition, and was one of the linchpins of our “strong young list”.

The Biggest Question: can Hodges stay fit and healthy, and who can we get with pick 14?

Deal or No Deal:
i. Reece Conca (for three years): deal, especially with Neale out.
ii. Jesse Hogan and #64 for Picks #6 and #23: deal, if fit (based on “due diligence”.)
iii. Pick 6, Pick 19 and Pick 55 for Lachie Neale and Pick 30: deal. Hate to see him go, but he wanted out and the compensation was fair.
iv. Rory Lobb, Pick 14, Pick 43 and Pick 47 for Pick 11 and Pick 19: no deal. Seems a bit like overs for a player with limited runs on the board.
V. Travis Colyer for three years and we traded a future pick: no deal. Trading future picks lands us back in the situation we had this year and I can see a three year deal becoming expensive list-clogger stuff.

Overall: 7/10 anchors for Bell.
Whilest I was keen to defend his “walking away” from the Hogan talks, it does make him look like a bit of a goose. We landed a big fish in Hogan, and there’s was some shrewd trading around some middle tier players and generating us a decent draft hand

"someone should organise a pre-game Dockerland event"

Nametags with your DL handle, rectangular with portrait orientation and a blue chevron background for the Sustained Success Fanboys, anchor shaped in purple for the True Believers.

Then a rumble in the carpark after WC flog us. Polly will have the ute's tranny blasting West Wide Story.

I'd come dressed as an emoji just to annoy Shane....who realistically probably wouldn't attend even if you dressed as an advertising banner and paid him.

The Good: from a transactional level; picks converted to players + plus remaining picks, its a win.

The Big Question: from a strategic level, have we turned our back on generational talent by cashing in the two top picks we had?

It deserves to be asked without being labelled negative.

That’s the question isn’t Hypen. We don’t have a generation to wait for success. The last 3 years is enough to suggest DL will “Chernobyl”, if we don’t start winning more than 8 games and ultimately play finals football. I’m just going to say that anything the club does, I’ll go for the ride.

The one thing they've done is address the requirement that is hardest to address. Key position talent. Back and forward. We may have the best talls in the AFL.

The rest can be added to easily enough, there is twenty decent mids in every draft. Time will tell. I must say the best 22 looks more than handy.

I felt we payed slightly unders and received slightly overs, with the Hogan and Neale deals.
I felt we paid slightly overs for Lobb.
Not sure about Conca.
Don't see where Colyer fits in a rebuild.
The pick swap was a masterstroke - without it none of the above was likely to happen and we still get a first round pick, probably for The 3rd Hill.

I'd go an 8.5/10

I hope we don't miss Lachie as much as I think we will, but he's gone and I wish him well.
If our two main imports produce to the level they can we are slightly in front, chuck in our
improved range of draft picks and I think we are better off. This of course will depend greatly on
the judicious use of those picks. Fingers crossed.

I'll put you down for an 11/10 Jezza.

Hypen, it's a fair question, but one so riddled with fence splinters that it's basically meaningless. Bell and Rosich had to make a call this week on whether to trade picks 5 and 6 for WA players in their early 20s, and I was curious what people thought of that decision this week.

If it works out well I know what everyone will think in 5 years. If it works out poorly I also know what everyone will think in 5 years.
