TOPIC: Neale Deal

Do we as supporters really care what motivates a player in their decision making process to sign or not. Personally no. Freo as a club have a pretty good record in retaining their players. Think Pav, Mundy and Langdon most recent. You get disharmony at every workplace, if in fact he left for that reason. It’s now a case of moving on and enjoy the fruits of our labour at the trade table. And to see what Cerra and Brayshaw can do because if their debut season is anything to go by, we could have something very special.

Yeah I care. If he wasn’t happy with the direction the club was heading and some of the recent decisions that have been made I’d like to know. After all as much as it has been said that we needed to move someone on to bring in Hogan and Lobb the deals could still have been done whilst keeping Neale.

Disagree bozza. We didn't have the picks to trade to bring in both Hogan and Lobb. A player of very high quality had to go.
Fyfe? No way.
Brayshaw or Cerra? No way.
The hills? No way, we need their run.

Name who wasn't untouchable on our part or acceptable on their part?

Also, if a player gets sold the idea of being captain of another club, but doesn't want to or can't say it, they may make up lame reasons why they wanted to leave.

We could of brought them in and kept Neale if he wanted to stay. The pick 6 we got from Brissy is probably worth the same as our future first rounder. It could of been done. It’s just a shame our football department wasn’t sorted out prior to Neale’s decision.

I think just maybe Jezza's complete backflip and many changes of opinion of the Neale situation have boiled down to the who cares, good riddance to him because Neale stated that he would prefer Fagan's coaching style and methods.
You don't say those sort of things about Roly Poly and expect Jezza to take that lightly.

No. His manager did.

And everything they say is gospel.

Bozza, I think there would be more substance to your argument if Neale had of been one of several players (not all necessarily top quality) who sought an exit this year.

As he was Han Solo in that regard, I’m more inclined to think it was issues FOR Cowboy, rather than AGAINST Freo, to go.

If he’d sought a trade to a club from his home state, on less or similar money to what we were offering (which pretty much sums up how Hogan came to us), then that would be another matter.

As I’ve mentioned in another post, the sort of money Brissie offered LN he simply wouldn’t get at another club (not just Freo). The Captaincy was clearly proffered, IMHO, and Beams leaving once he was secured only strengthens that view.

Add in the fact that we were able to basically swap LN out for both Hogan & Lobb means a win-win for both clubs.

Time to draw a line under it and move onto the draft - nothing to see here.

*edit - Hyphen, if we make the finals next year I’ll buy a keg too. Going to need something to wash all that humble pie down with!

I think most of us would prefer Fagan's coaching style. Certainly easier on the eye.

Yeah Jason agree with you re the captaincy but contract length and value I think we could of matched. To say though we needed to ship off Neale to get Hogan and Lobb in though isn’t right.

If you're looking for ammo for a big whinge about the club, you need to consider where you're coming from.

Losing good players is always accompanied by hand wringing and picking up good players feels easy. Mathematically, every traded player that arrives somewhere had to leave somewhere else.

Come to think of it, between 18 and 25 I lived at a year or more in 3 Australian states and spent a year in other country. At that age, "because you can" is a good enough reason to move states. I don't begrudge Lachie a change of scenery.

So LN goes to a team that’s won less games than Freo in the last 3 years, and we’re debating about the clubs playing style. Brisbane has been rebuilding since their glory days in 2000-2003. 4 coaches later and they’re still not played finals. Without Beams, LN’s presence will make little difference. As good as LN is, their midfield depth took a backward step losing Beams. Ours too maybe. Time will tell. Like I said show me an organisation where everyone gets on otherwise move on.

One thing that people said was that LN chose Brisse over Freo because Brissie are 'closer to a premiership' than Freo. Brisbane was about 8 wins away from the 8, Freo about 5 wins away. Ironically, with LN leaving, we bolstered our list ostensibly filling in some gaps in the forward line. Brissie still needs to make up 8 wins to get close to the 8.

As for Freo being stronger, I think we definitely are going into next year. We were about 8 points away from beating the Weagles, and if we did, and if Port didn't have a brain lapse gifting McGovern a shot at goal, then the Weagles don't win the flag.

Now that the dust has settled, what I read from other forums is that LN wasn't impressed with the fitness/attitude/training standards of a handful of contracted Freo players whose efforts especially in away losses were less than stellar. In other words Lachie tried his guts out and was professional, but some teammates weren't and he didn't see that changing going forward. Ironically too, the fact that we've bolstered the list means that there are some who won't be anywhere near automatic inclusions into our best 22. In fact, these same handful won't be getting a game anytime soon unless there are injuries. Competition for spots, nothing beats it. Too bad LN won't be around, but his leaving changes the dynamic of whose selected each week.

Enjoyed four very good years at the club and three not so. Decided to break his contract for whatever reasons, his perogative. I guess when the going got tough Lachie got going. Says as much about him as it does about Freo. Don't care too much about why he left, there was no exodus, he is just another opponent now albeit a very wealthy one.
