TOPIC: List size conundrum

Aaron Sandilands is a generational player and the best ruckman of the last more than a decade. Our win/loss differential with and without him is, like, different galaxies.
I’d keep playing him until he loses his height advantage or would rather mow the lawn.

Thanks for the correction Thornton, I forgot about the latter round picks that rarely get used (or mentioned).

Though with only a couple of free list spots that makes even more sense to trade our later picks for ones in next year’s draft as we won’t use them anyway.

Hodor has done well to lose two thirds of his puppy fat in a season and has increased his tank to that of half an AFL footballer. We want him around for a decade and there is no hurry. He was injured for half of this year and will only improve next year.

He can support 211 for another year, taking over when he is knackered or injured but there is no urgency to retire Sandilands. Hodor will be pissed off playing the bulk of his time at Peel but Sandi is a long time retired and Sean needs to cool his jets and his chance will come. He is not there yet. Close but not there.

What there is an urgency to do is to begin the two ruck strategy. Now we have Lobb Im convinced finally Roly will play two bona fide ruckmen at a time, with 211 the primary ruck and Lobb the resting forward. That should have started two years ago but anyway better late than never. It will be great to see the big fella Sandi getting a rest in the forward pocket without having to take Tabs from the forward line. With Hogan patrolling around thats a dangerous long ball into the forward line for opposition backs.

Good luck going in with a small backline against Freo next season.

Don't get me wrong, he's been a great player for a long time but he'll be 37 next year and his body is breaking down more and more, we need more spots on the list so we can draft for our future.

All the other rucks on the list can play for 8 years plus, it's time for Sandi to pull up stumps and move into a ruck coaching role.

Yeah nah. Sandi is a much better player than the bottom three big guys on our list will ever be.

Even when he’s out injured.

If Sandilands is fit and ready to go I woukd play him in tandem with Lobb at least early in the season. He can play big minutes leaving Lobb free to spend majority of time forward.
If Darcy is fit enough to effectively carry the load and allow Lobb the same amount of time forward then maybe he replaces Sandi. Either way we have very competent cover if one goes down.

Yes, Sandi is better than just about anyone as a ruckman, but the way he spoke when he signed on for 2019, was that things would be a little fluid in terms of his own game time and his mentoring of the others.
With Lobb on the field as a big forward and Hogan and Tabs running all over the place, marking everything, why can't they simply get Lobb or Tab etc, to contest every ruck contest forward of the centre, or deeper if need be, and Darcy spend more time on the ground without having to run deep forward to contests. Sort of like the pre-rolling-scrum ruckman, hanging back-kick-behind-the-play...mopping up...and having a rest, but still a presence on the ground.
