TOPIC: Pick philosophy

Great question.

In a vacuum, I'd take option 3. It's the most for 'draft points', which is the AFL's data analysts' attempt to quantify pick value.

I'd change to 4 if there was a once-in-a-generation WA kid at 5 I knew Freo could get, but that would be rare. I lot could go wrong. I'd consider 3 if there were a few WA kids at the end of the first round.

If we use the ‘Morra’ experience as a guide - putting all your eggs in one basket (option 4) can have disastrous consequences.

Depending on draft quality depth, list stage and prob a hundred other variables - Option 2. Not all in on one player but with picks that can make a real difference (e.g. Fyfe at pick 20 or so).

To not answer my own question, I'd say: all of the above.
That is, it just needs to be a consistent strategy across the whole organisation.

So if you go for option 2. Don't just do it for one year; do it for five years. Assemble a reasonable squad of mid-range picks then build a team-based game-plan that uses the evenness of that team.

Or go for option 4. But don't just do it for one year; do it every year. And develop a plan based on having 5 aces and a bunch of unskilled (literally) worker bees around them.

I reckon either could get the job done.
I'd go for option 2, with as many mid-range picks as possible - even 4 picks in the 30s - just because that's the kind of team I'd like to support. Working class. Blue collar.
But I'd only pick sliders - kids slated for the top 10 but who get dinged by injury or off-field stuff. Again, I just think that'd be fun.

But what would Donny say?
Believe me we've got a lot of money its huge we are winning again. Ignore the fakenews but we want the amazing tremendous unbelievable men and women not the lightweight low-energy overrated total losers, you'll find out, China
