TOPIC: Pick philosophy

Here's a philosophical footy drafting question.
Imagine you need to fill 4 spots on your roster and start with picks 10, 30, 50, 70 in a generic draft.
Which is better:
Option 1 - Stay put
Option 2 - Trade out 10 & 30 for picks 15, 20 & 25
Option 3 - Trade out 30 & 50 for pick 20
Option 4 - Trade out 10, 30 & 50 for pick 5

You pick up any extra players you need in the pre-season draft.

Don't tell me why these trades would never get offered - just imagine they do. Which option leaves you with the strongest squad at the end of the day?

Put them all together and get Hoges then play one guy short every other game the following year.

I choose the option that came before you asked us to pick one.

Depends what stage of development your team is at.

Now Joe, you're just being difficult. You work for Freo maybe?

Just imagine your team is in a rebuild stage, Joe. It works for Steve.

It depends on the draft, if there was a KPF from WA available at around pick 5 you’d do the trade to land him.
Currently the best WA player is Hill, who meets our desired criteria of speed and skill, he’s likely to go mid teens so I can understand why we moved on pick 6 to land pick 11 and a couple of second round picks as these seem likely to get us some more local talent, especially as our next pick was 81.
Not saying it’s the right option but I understand it.

I’d ask “what would Jesus do?”

(Not Purple Jesus, the one before him)

Jesus would take picks 58, 82, 98 & 170 and turn them into first rounders.

Well, slammen definitely wins the award for "following instructions".
Not much competition, but still, well done.

Trading down to later picks seems a mostly bad idea to me. If you need to make up numbers there's always the PSD or even elevating one of your better rookies. If you want to go all the way you need to build some class. Unless fortune smiles upon you this is going to require some lean years getting there, like it or not.

Maybe we could employ Michael Barlow as a consultant to spot the next Michael Barlow?

Tropical, the correct answer is it's driven by the talent profile of the draft. That's why port traded down. High end talent and then it falls away in this one.

Port have essentially enacted your opt 4.

Pick law or medicine. Or maybe engineering. The job prospects are better.
