I’ve just read that AFL article and whilst some of it seems accurate enough - they wander off into la-la land by raising the prospect of WC having a crack at him next year should we (not Melb) decide to pass on him this year.

The fundamental question is what will WC have to offer Melb from a draft pick perspective??

They will likely have to part with next year’s first round pick this year to land Kelly. If they don’t fall off the cliff like the Doggies after ‘16, then even the following years pick isn’t likely to be better than 10-18.

If Melbourne want 2 first round picks this year they’re not going to want much less next year.

Do these writers really think they can bluff us into agreeing to trades that suit everyone but us?

I just hope Belly takes this hard line stance into other areas we consistently get stitched up in like fixturing, MRP and umpiring - that’ll really put a fire under those VFL knobs.

If we get both Lobb and Hogan, you’d think they’re in our best 22. So our forward line cannot fit all of Lobb, Hogan, Tabs, Cammac, Ballas, Walters, Cox, Matera, Switkowski, resting ruckman Sandi/Darcy.

Jezza, Matera, & Switkowski, to Peel, Cox to defense, Walters to the midfield, rest the ruckman on the bench. Problem solved.

Shane, once you've secured the draft capital it's who you pick that makes you Fremantle.
First you listen to what the experts say then you ignore that and pick the player that most echoes the spirit of Clive.

Belly has it all under control. Drafts work in a dominoe effect and should work out a smooth end and everyone is happy. Looks like Ross has had a hand in the planning of the dominoe line.

I would like to see an immediate public apology from Peter Bell Something like:

Firstly, I apologise to Melbourne Football Club for not enabling the trade you want.

Secondly, I apologise to all the football writers and sundry entitled wankers who wanted to write up a big multi-club trade.

Lastly, I apologise to anyone anywhere who gets kept awake by the barking of neighbourhood dogs.

All this bashing of Freo is based on the assumption that Neale is leaving. We’re holding up Brisbane because “Neale is going”, we’re holding up Melbourne because we’ll use the pick from “Neale going”.

Seems to me that the club and Bell have said clearly, from the beginning that: Neale isn’t going. IMHO, as far as the club is concerned, they have a year to convince him that Freo is the place to be. I tend to agree. When Bell is saying “we can’t match what Melbourne wants”, I believe he means it. As near as I can see, Bell just made the most miraculous pick swap so that he had a first and second round pick to offer Melbourne. They said “no”. So what else is he supposed to do? The obvious answer, to everyone but Bell, is “trade Neale”. But Neale is a keeper, one of the best in the competition. Hell, if Neale has mates in Brissie, I wouldn’t be surprised if Bell is at the trade table asking what Brizzie want in exchange for those mates.
Keeping Neale is our first, second and third priority.l, they said. I believe him. And I support that stance. I’m happy for others to disagree with that stance, but when did it become ASSUMED that Neale is leaving?

Melbourne would be the worst club to deal with with The Old Boys Fraternity standing firm and that's why the club is has been in the eight seven times and three wooden spoons in 25 years, Fremantle has been in the eight seven times and one wooden spoon. I would love a audit on Melbourne's 42,000 membership as they must give them free when you enroll at Melbourne Grammar School. 1964 was their last Premiership..54 years ago old.

Ok so I may be a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but...

If the last bit of the trade is being done on prime-time tv, isn't there an incentive to leave most of the big deals to the end (even if they've already been agreed upon)?

Good bit of theatre methinks.

The criticism is coming from those who think Freo are holding the whole process up by being unreasonable.

I think we are. They are asking the same for Neale as Melb are for Hogan. For every Hogan type player there are 50 in and under midfielders who could do 80% of what Neale does. They are not rare.

If I was Bell I would jump at pick 5 and an early third rounder.

I think what is becoming clear from his first few days in the post is that Belly is going to be the ruthless, hard-headed individual all strong clubs have, or need to have, in order to be successful.

He’s floated the idea of trading Bennell to make it absolutely crystal clear that he has been a complete bust as a recruit and not behaved himself when the primary job he was recruited for (I.e. playing senior footy for us) he hasn’t done. One more slip up, son, and there’s the door. I imagine the likes of Cammac would want to take note that if you want to p$iss your career away on the night club strip you won’t be doing it at the Dockers.

So from your list, Jezza, Cammac is the one who would want to put his partying ways behind him quick smart or this will be his last year in the AFL.

Rosco turned around the careers of Walters & CPearce through a bit of ‘tough love’. He’s also tried it with Bennell but to no avail.

If Bennell & Cammac have half the character of their footy talent - then they’ll see this as a ‘sliding doors’ moment and pull their fingers out.

The optimist in me sees them both holding our first Cup aloft. The pessimist in me doesn’t see either of them in purple in 2020, with Bennell lucky to make to 2019.

Either way, I’m backing Belly to be this hard nut. Which is why 2019 could be RLs last season if we don’t at least stay in finals contention until late in the season, with a minimum 10 wins and no more capitulations like Geelong.
