m.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-11/new-rules-r...ine-changes-for-2019

THE AFL will introduce nine new rule and interpretation changes for 2019, including starting positions for centre bounces and revamped rules around kick-ins from behinds.

The hands-in-the-back rule will also be scrapped.

Isn't this just what you want to read when the AFL start telling you about rule changes.

"It is hoped..."

First bit of ridiculousness - Why would players be allowed to snap the ball after the siren? If it's play on any other time then it's play on after the siren.

This one is good

Marking contests

The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.

It should say

The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation was silly and didn't work so we're going back to the way we interpreted it for the 100 years prior to that.

They missed a big chance to fix up the deliberate out of bounds rule to something that is not so open to bizarre interpretations.

Maybe they are saving that one up to fix next year

For all those of us who remember the old push in the back rule in the marking contest...it was open to a lot of acting and misinterpretation by umpires. The hands in the back rule came in to force players to use their bodies rather than their hands, therefore eliminating all guess work. Easy and best rule change back in the day...keep the hands off the back...use your body...or get in front.
Now we shall see all sorts of acting as we did in the 100 years prior.

According to the AFL site regarding the after-the-siren-kick-for-goal, the around the corner snap has to be executed in line with the mark and the centre of the goals - so the player would have to start off the mark on an even sharper angle to execute the kick legally.

Huh? Snap shots should be play on or banned altogether. Shane's right, there's no in-between on this.

It's the kind of carry on that has Brandon Matera, and countless young kids at the local oval, lining up for a set shot at goal from 20 metres on a 10 degree angle by facing the boundary line sideways off the mark. You need to discourage this rubbish not encourage it.

Snap shots after the siren? As if this is a highlight of our game? No, learn to kick straight at the goal. A skill of the game for many years. Snapping is fair enough but allowing special privilege as in coming from off the line, albeit from the non kicking side...is just too silly.

What are they going to do about Buddy's 'natural arc'?

That's going to be a new interpretation on top of a new interpretation

If the kickout man can just play on without kicking to himself first, with the closest opponent 20 meters away, why wouldn’t he play on every time?
Why even have a goal square for that matter?

The Matthew Primus rule has gone. Shame Sandi is at the end of his career.

Allowing a player to play on while the 50m is being paced out is very tricky for the umps. They have to watch the player at all times getting ready to blow "play on". If they are not looking, the player can do what he likes and not get legally tackled.

And Tendai can retire now - runners only allowed on after a goal and must leave before play restarts.
