TOPIC: Hogan

So now there’s an AFL-mandated meditation process? Bloody Kirk.

But in all seriousness, I hope you’re right yeti. My concern is that the Hogan trade, if it were to happen, might be too late for Melbourne to land May. If Brisbane holds the line on Beams, Collingwood might use the picks offered for him to sweeten the deal with GC17 for May, and then a great deal of the incentive for Melbourne comes off the table.

Hypen, would I trade pick 11 and next year’s first rounder? It’s a tough call. If you look at the list of players taken at pick 11, there’s some great players (Tom Lynch, Toby Greene and Steele Sidebottom, for example) some misses (Gysberts, Vezpremi) and some good players (Menzel, Sheed). Add another pick in the 8-12 range and I think you’re getting to a reasonable price for Hogan. The question is whether Melbourne sees it that way.

Brisbane have taken some hard-line positions on trades, seemingly without getting any heat for it. I can’t see them budging until the last day. Who has the most to lose by Neale staying at Freo next season? I know Bell is making a case for keeping him, but given Neale is an UFA next year and wants out, I think the absence of a deal hurts Freo more. Take pick 5 and something other than a first round pick, and take it early enough to keep other options on the table. I would have liked to have nailed Brisbane on that one, and I imagine Bell would too, but I don’t think we can let ego get in the way of doing a deal.

Morgan, you have highlighted the other scarce resource in trade week, time.

Time for Melb to get May, time for us to address other significant gaps on our list.

I don't want to be too critical as I was wrong on Hogan but does every deal have to be a game of chicken?

And Hogan needs to pull his head in on what's realistic.

Neale will be a restricted free agent next year.
We can let him go then and get compensated or match or trade..

I'm not sure that describIng it as an AFL mandated meditation process is all that accurate, Morgan.

More like the AFL doing it's usual 'achieving a desired result'. I don't think that's it's a formal process going to them for mediation but they are available for that purpose....so you better listen to what they want!

Melbourne has all the hallmarks of the AFL's next big success story, so those friendly guys at AFL House will be there to help

Demo, the AFL isn’t particularly transparent about the free agent compensation rules, but there is a big difference between the compensation coming after our first pick next year (let’s assume we finish mid-table, that’s a pick in the 8-12 range) and the end of the first round (pick 19-22). If Brisbane is offering pick 5 now, we’d be mad not to make a deal just because the flotsam of the deal isn’t as valuable as we’d like. It sucks, but we should just split the difference and move on. If that means getting some other players involved (like Starcevich or Cox) and sending late picks the other way, then explore that.

I just don’t see the value in keeping a guy who doesn’t want to be here.

Me neither - get some moola out of the Brisbane bank and go shopping at the Hogan store.

Hogan’s body language is all wrong. He’s not keen on a move but because Melbourne want May and so has given Hogan a push he’s put out an ambit claim and if the Dockers are silly enough to bite he’ll grudgingly come. Don’t do it.

Food for thought. For the last 3 seasons, HB, has been on our payroll and apart from the 2AFL games, he’s collected his pay cheques which included his contractual payments plus match payments. ( insert amount). That’s a significant amount of $$$ out of the TPP. Match payments, are paid to a player even if he’s injured can be up to 38 weeks. Happy to be corrected on this info. So if Jesse is sidelined for a period of time, we could have another HB on our payroll. The principle of caveat emptor comes to mind.

I notice a lot of posters keep saying Neale will just pack up and go next year if we enforce his contract.
No, not necessarily. Demo is right, He is NOT an unrestricted free agent next year. If BrizVegas offer him a 4 year contract worth 800k pa lets say, we can match it and he has to stay.
The Hogan situation will still be there in a year.
Im starting to cool on Hogan, given those asking figures and I am keen to see what Cox can do as a 21 yo and Tabs with an injury free year, with Lobb lurking in the pocket.
Overall our most pressing need is for a Rankine type if we cant/shouldnt get Hogan.

Rhufus, we can't make Neale play for us. We don't own him. Even if we wanted to match Brisbane's offer next year, he doesn't have to sign with us. He can enter the draft at which point Freo gets nothing, or at least he can threaten to. What are you doing to the culture of the club having him there in the meantime? What are you signalling to other players (and their agents)?

You're either in or you're out. There aren't many places of employment where it is that binary, but I reckon a footy club is one of them.

He's out. Sell high on the traitorous hobbit and move on.

Stuff him. If he calls our bluff and enters the draft Morgan, lets pick him again, we will probably get first pick anyway.

Seriously I understand your point about "if you dont want to play for us, see ya later, we dont want you either".

But there is an equally valid stance from a club culture point of view that says "when you sign up a contract with Freo for 4 years, you stay for 4 years". We shouldnt become a Gold Coast who are being piss taked by the comp. That panel today blatantly stated that they would simply allow Gold Coast to select the South Australian boys Lukosius and Rankine, let them develop them for two years and then take them back on the cheap as they "nominate" another club. This has got out of hand and I dont mind if Freo plays hard ball and takes a stand.

This breaking contracts thing the players are doing and nominating where they want to go is driving me bonkers. I hate that 4 times premiers can get Scully for pick 70 or whatever they`re doing.

The point is Freo is doing nothing wrong by sticking to the terms of Neales contract and obeying the rules the AFL and Players Association agreed to. If you havent done 7 years at a club you dont qualify for free Agency. Suck it up Lachie, the players have never had it better. Do your time or persuade the club you want to go to, to get off their backsides and make a lucrative offer.

Hawthorn has picked up a previous GWS number 1 draft pick GWS 27 year old player Scully for a mere pick 53. He had an a ankle fracture last year which is a concern but the Hawks have gave him a four year deal. All Australian 2016 2017.
Bargain.

This comes on the back of the Hawks "trading for" the player chosen immediately before Griffin Logue for two almost certainly irrelevant picks that don't even exist yet.

They are a truly great club, Hawthorn: no other Victorian club has done quite as well as the Hawks in taking advantage of the ill-conceived, destablising endeavours of the AFL over the past decade to chase extra dollars by establishing two clubs in markets where almost nobody could give a stuff. What a fantastic "competition."

For all of the pointless hand-wringing over the rule changes, the sport has been totally undermined by establishing two new totally irrelevant clubs, who are apparently so professional that they haven't yet worked out how to use Excel.
