Interesting that Lobb has now become our primary target. What’s Hogan waiting for? Melbourne are not discussing a trade until Hogan nominates. I assume that the only reason for this is that Hogan is waiting to see if Freo get enough out of the LN trade to be able to swing a trade with Melb. Hopefully he hasn’t got cold feet.

Unfortunately, no.

Players who are in the top 25% earners (I.e. top 9-10 players) have to do 8 years service - but even then only as a Restricted FA.

Hogan has only completed 5 seasons as his first year of 2013 didn’t count as he was a mini-draft selection in 2012.

So even when his current contract ends next year - we’d still need to trade for him as he wouldn’t become a RFA until 2021.

Hogan was contracted and trained/played at the club in 2013 so that year should count amongst his 8 years of service.

I thought they dropped the years required limit to 7 for restricted FA's at some point but I must have misread it.

That’s a tricky one Biz, whilst on the one hand you are correct in that he trained with Melbourne in 2013 but wasn’t eligible to play AFL (even though he was allowed to play in the NAB cup that year) as he was drafted as a 17 year old, I don’t think it counts.

Even if they included 2013, he still wouldn’t become a RFA until 2020. In all of this hooha over Hogan’s potential trade I’ve not heard a thing about free agency playing a part.

He came, he toured, he a saw a supposed football department with a CEO for a recruiting officer, a club not really going anywhere fast and thought to himself..........wtf was I thinking? If i stay where I am I'm a certainty to play finals next year.

So in summary that cavalry that's coming is now less the best forward we could have attracted and a crack midfielder who doesn't want to come to us, but we got a nothing sort of midfielder who doesn't really get that many disposals and a big bloke that doesn't get hold of the ball much, plus getting rid of a potential talent who is always in the infirmary.

Oh and quite possibly lose our best possession getter and leader to boot.

That cavalry makes F-Troop look good.
