I’m struggling to understand player trade values today.
Apparently former No.1 draft pick and absolute gun, Scully, is worth only a 3rd round pick because of how much salary he draws and the fact GWS needs to off load some. Really?? I thought the more a player was paid - the higher the trade value!? That’s exactly the argument being used to beef up Hogan’s value.
Yet Lobb, quite frankly their 3rd tall forward and part-time ruckman until this year, is worth a 1st round pick. Is that because one is going to the Hawks and the other to Freo??
On that basis, Lobb is worth at best a 3rd rounder - and only then because he’s a few years younger than Scully.
Sure Scully blew out an ankle this year and only played 1 game, but ankles (except the severely broken types) rarely end or severely impinge upon players careers. Our own Barra did something similar a few years ago and he is as good as he’s ever been this year. The recently traded Rohan had a horribly broken ankle (that led to the sliding free kick rule) and he came back just a quick as before.
Once again, this all smacks of one rule for the ‘elite’ clubs and one for the rest.
Lobb should get done for pick 23 at worse, but if the Scully trade goes through as described, pick 30 at best. If we had a pick in the late 30’s/early 40’s, I’d have said that instead.
