Great to have so many options for a change but Jones aand Meek are only ruckmen not key forwards, Apeness is on his last chance and Dixon is still developing.
Also Collingwood used two big forwards- Cox and Mihoecek....spelling?

First thing said on the promo is " He was unable to play for the first two seasons" and the first thing brought up in the interview is the current injury. Aug 2018

Just to clarify, one of those first 2 seasons he wasn’t eligible to play seniors and won Casey’s B&F as a 17 year old.

He then had a back injury that kept him out of his ‘first’ season with Melbourne - but followed that up with winning back to back goal kicking awards for the Dees and the Rising Star award in his ‘second’ season.

We desperately need a genuine, proven power forward - not pin our hopes on the either too young or too injury prone blokes we currently have on our list.

We miss him this year then prepare for the horror of watching him play in blue and gold in 2020.

Get the deal done Steve & Belly!!

West coast will add Kelly, Lobb and Coniglio to their list over the next two seasons. They are lining up for a Hawks style run of flags. Hogan is the pick of the bunch though.

If we keep in mind the club’s stated goal was to bring in 4 first round draft picks between 2016-2018 - then we should meet that target on new blood alone.

But if we happen to land Hogan on top of Conca today - then we’ll be adding another 2 top 10 draft picks to the list.

If Bennell can get over his calf issues and adding in Logue who missed all of this season - it’s like we’ll have an extra 5 top 10 draft picks to bring into the side in 2019.

Whilst Conca’s disposal efficiency is about on par with Cowboy - he’s averaging about 50% more in tackles. It was a year or two ago that LN had the (dubious) record of most tackles missed in the AFL.

Whilst I’m still not happy about the prospect of losing Neale - I think the ability to effectively swap out him (pick 58) for Hogan (Rising Star, proven goal kicker) is a win for the club.

Inside mids are far easier to develop/replace than gun forwards.

If we can somehow strike a deal with GWS to bring in Lobb without touching our current pick 5, then we add some extra forward/ruck cover for Sandi & Darcy.

The pick up of Hogan will also mean a change in game plan that many on here have been screaming out for - even though an objective observer would note clear changes to the game style circa 2012-16.

Either way, how flexible Roly is with his game plan should be answered once and for all.

With all these inclusions and an extra pre-season our recent recruits will have had to gel with each other, I’m thinking a minimum of 10-12 wins next season is needed for Roly to see out his contract.

But the 100 point shellackings and completely uncompetitive efforts against the power club’s will have to cease altogether - otherwise anything less than a return to finals would be unacceptable.

Speaking of inside mids, if the Slime can turn Dom Sheed and Redden into premiership players, then anything is possible. Freo turned LN into the player he is and ain’t a top 10 draft pick. I see Conca as a HB flanker which would then release Blakely into the midfield. Blakely is a big bodied midfielder, a Mundy type player. Walters midfield minutes will now come to the fore. It proved that this year and that had a profound output on LN. So, while losing Neale will hurt, the gains will outweigh the loss. I think with Walters and Blakely in the midfield full time, suddenly you get midfield depth with a little star power attached.

You get more bizarre by the day, jezza.

If we wanted another half back, why not just recruit a half back? Why go out and recruit an injury prone midfielder to turn him into a half back, so that we can turn another player into a midfielder?

Not that it matters. It seems if you want to play for Freo then playing at half back is the go.

Worrying about what to do about Dixon, Ape, McCarthy, Strdnica, Meek, Jones, Cox and Kersten in a discussion about getting Hogan is like worrying what to do about to do about Banfield, Sheridan and Giro if we signed Coniglio.

Hogan is a gun. If the young guys are good enough, they will find a way into the team. If you really have a logjam, you trade them home (or close to home) for players or picks we can use.

But let's go through the list, shall we:

Dixon - Is a teenager. In 3 years if he's a good AFL tall forward, he can take Tabs spot, and we can trade Tabs to a Victorian team, or take the FA first round pick compensation.

Apeness: Has played 12 games in 5 years. If he's the cause of a logjam of tall forwards it will be a mircale, not a problem. Besides, he's probably best suited as a back-up ruck.

McCarthy: Is a half-forward in any event, and I think he'll thrive with Hogan in the team. I love the idea of him pushing up the field to be a taket 80m from goal, and being isolated in the 50 if he has a good match-up.

Strdnica, Meek, Jones: What are the ods any of these guys get to 50 games? We could cut Meek and Jones tomorrow and I would lose zero sleep.

Cox: The kid just turned 20, is slow as molasses, and will currently kick you about a goal and 3 points a game. His lack of speed means he’s not a plug-and-play footballer - he needs the right set up to be effective. I think that could be as a third tall (think Tom Lynch at Adelaide), or as a marking loose backman. At 20 years, he has time to grow into a very good player, but I’m not sure we should be rejecting an elite goalkicker because we already have Cox. If we have a logjam in the future, I'm sure one of the Adelaide teams will take him off our hands.

Kersten: Actually performed ok as a back-up defender. Destined to have Alex Silagni's career.

Good analysis there Morgan and on the half back line we already have a few good half back types without adding another. The other player mentioned earlier, Griffin Logue, if he can get over his injury problems I see him long term as a big bodied midfielder a la Pav style when he played midfield. Some of his highlights when he was playing WAFL saw him playing this style for Swans.

Yeti, I’m happy for Conca to play in the midfield but his role at Richmond varied. And he’s said it himself, he’s performed better playing in the backline. But it’s irrelevant. Our master coach will get the best out of him.

Morgan, Cox is very young and shows a lot of promise.

Didn’t you just make a post about Conca bagging?

It’s a strange world.

I said Cox has time to grow into a very good player. I don't think it's bagging a player to say he's no Jesse Hogan. It's just a fact that Hogan gave Melbourne the same average goals per game as Cox and Tabs combined did for us.

My concern for Cox is his pace. I imagine that was the concern for recruiters, which is why a junior All Australian CHB went in the third round of the draft. If you can make it work with Cox that's great, but I just don't think you pass on a talent like Hogan because Cox has shown glimpses.
