TOPIC: Clarkson's Influence

I agree with that, Shane but what gets me worked up is that we can see what other teams do to be successful and we sit back and say something stupid like, 'we are on the right path. Stick with it and things will get better'

Being stubborn isn't the same as staying the course. We get that bit wrong as well.

All we have to look forward to in 2019 is doing the same stupid things we've done in derbies for the last 4 years - bomb it high into the forward 50 to give Hurn and McGovern cheap marking stats.

The thing that worries me about getting Hogan is Lyon will do what he did with Reiwoldt and Pavlich. He'll use their skills to allow him to drop another player behind the ball and expect them to make the for the loss of scoring power. It's won him zero flags and is taking away the chances of Freo players to get a premiership.

Watching the slime win flags isn't my idea of sustained success.

I almost wish the AFL forces the WAFC to give back our licences so we can effectively govern our club

That's too melancholy dddocker.

With medical and cryogenic advancements we will be watching Freo blow it for another 50 years.

They won and their supporters will still be the same, that’s something they have to live with.....good luck to them.

Jump ship if you like their style.

Yes, I like their style. Their winning style compared to our losing style. Why does that mean we want to be slime supporters?

Its not a question of style, noddy. Way to avoid acknowledging the point.

Whatever your thoughts about the slime, they are a better managed club, a better coached club and they they just won another premiership.

Thats 6 out of the last 6 flags to teams using Clarkson's approach of prioritising skills. How many flags has your idol won? How many flags have been won by Ass coaches her's trained up. Ummm that would be zero.

He isn't the messiah but we do know the club covered up for him being a naught boy.

The other common thread in recent years is coaches lightening up, letting go and transferring ownership to the players. And these to me are the areas where Lyon needs to sharpen up.

Well....I would have said that if one agrees that Lyon has to change his gamestyle, then one has to be in favour of 6-6-6.

Sooner it comrs in the sooner it enforces change on the fellow.

Will also fully display how 'adaptable' and 'good' he is as a coach, which I suspect will be 'not very'.

This has shown that games of footy are not just won on the back of the midfield, winning stoppages and clearances.

Aerial power at both ends of the ground is just as important and skills to set up attacking play right from the last line of defence.

I’m sick of the statement that Lyon brings up about games being won or lost in the midfield..........whatever the midfield actually is anymore. It simply isn’t true and just serves to try and divert attention from the fact we don’t have a functional forward line or dominant key defenders and don’t score enough and often leak too many easy goals.

CA you should go to a few of the WCE games to try their style. There’s winning and then there’s Winning.

People thought the Australian cricket side were great because they were winners. I stopped supporting Aussie team years ago.....arrogant and self-righteous .....just like the mob who think they represent the whole of W.A.

Noddy, you are confusing attitude with playing style. No-one wants to emulate their attitude, but the game plan and skill execution is another matter.

KK, you forgot to add that whichever side won today, the result would have been a win for skills and attack. And yes, we have proven numerous times this year that winning the midfield battle, and the clearance battle is no garuntee for success. What is needed is to win the battle inside the 50 meter arcs, at both ends of the ground. If you win it in your forward 50, you then need the skills to kick goals, not miss easy shots. If you win it in your defensive 50, you need the skills to get it to your forward 50. The midfield should just be 6 blokes helping that happen, not a crowd of 15 rugby players falling on the ball at every opportunity

You can add Fagan to that list, again on the back of superior recruiting of an effective spine, ball winning smalls and intense skills training under Hodge, Brisbane are going to be a force next year. As for WCE, they will lose Lycett but maintajn a winning game style.
What is depressing, is to overhear a colleague say he doesn't like West Coast, if he was going to support a WA team it would be Freo "but Freo are sh@t", and struggling to think of positive differentiators. We even suck at AFLW, adopting the Roly game plan. Not saying he's not trying to change but it hasn't been working

I think there are some positives in replacing the list and football dept managers, and bringing in Belly, but list renewal and skills coaching has underperformed, and we get mixed messages about Lyon, and signs of a sub-standard culture.
When Buckley lightened up, he delegated. Same with Hardwick. THe players gained confidence. For that to happen, there must be trust. Now begins the idle speculation:
- I wonder how much the Neale saga is influenced by a superior culture at Brisbane?
- Bell's inaugural statement that he will assist the coaches(etc) to perform is a start, because of Ross's big ego he needs to mentor them to come out from under Ross's shadow and be fearless.
Whatever. I reckon Ross has one year to lift his own game, else he has to go. Having a very young team gives him that year otherwise he would be gone already.
