TOPIC: The Worst Year Ever

Goodie, you're surely basing your assessment of our list on Ross being one of the best coaches in the land. Seriously can you tell me that the first 17 I've listed would not be part of most teams'best 22. There are All Australians, a Brownlow Medallist and Club B& F amongst them. You need to be a bit objective and I'm wondering how much you've actually seen these guys play. There are more question marks over Ross'coaching ability in the current competition than there is on these players.

Ross has changed. He’s playing kids. He’s brought in more runners. He’s given players licence to go through the middle. We are now an outside team (we were well beaten in contested ball and won most possessions on the outside). When we had talls available they were often inside 50. We very rarely had to hold the ball up going forward. We often started a man back at the bounce, but in general play we were more inclined to let our defenders go on-on-one.

If you want to say Lyon has pivoted in the wrong direction, or too slowly, or not addressed key deficiencies fair enough. But the way we play has changed.

And they still do all those things badly, Morgan. Lyon has flexed a bit, but it's been enforced. He had a chance to start many youngsters careers in 2015, but he didn't. Taberner was in and out like a waiter working a full house. Apparently had some undisclosed KPIs to meet...

And Lyon still put systems well ahead of skills training. That's why implementing the system sucks. Quick, attacking football needs the skill set to get it done. Freo go about it like it's a clanger festival.

Then if we get another inside mid, maybe Conca or Jye Bolton to replace Lachie and Jesse Hogan fronts in the forward line we should improve, Alternatively our younger mids Brayshaw, Cerra, Banfield, Giro and North fill the gap. If we get a fair run on the injury front would also help. I hope our fitness staff are reviewed after all our soft tissue injury problems.

GN, the first 6 blokes you listed would probably get a game in any other side.

But as for the rest, they’ve either not completed a body of work or too young to call ‘A-graders’.

Injuries have taken their toll on a few but I think the most telling indictment on our list management is the number of reasonable high (within the first 3 rounds) picks that did absolutely nothing for us prior to their delistings. I’m not going to list them all here but there’s a Wikipedia page on Freo recruiting that lays it all out.

Having talented lists does not necessarily translate into success either as Gold Coast and GWS have shown.

Perhaps it is the coach but I doubt even Clarkson would have done much better with the available players we’ve had to choose from the past 2 seasons.

Maybe it comes back to the Strength & Conditioning team not doing their jobs properly??

But with a full review underway with a new Football Manager steering it, I expect some hard conclusions will be drawn and changes made.

Otherwise we simply continue our history of mediocrity & disappointment.

Yes, I'd like to see us give Bolton a chance and I'm looking forward to North having an injury free run(like so many of our players),but for the life of me I can't see the point in the offer we apparently have on the table for Conca next year.
Turns 27 next year, the same age as Bolton, but is going to cost us some of the very few picks we already have.

Offers no more than Bolton and will cost more. Richmond won't stand in his way if he leaves I'll bet you.

If you just go on overall numbers, I'd say our list doesn't look too bad. But if, as Morgan has done, you split it into its different parts its a different story.
Our defence are good. No problems there, need a little more experience in Nyhuis, Duman and Pearce, but pretty solid. Wilson, Langdon and S Hill to deliver the ball out of defence look good.
Our midfield is ok, but after Fyfe, Neale, B Hill, Blakely (I think he'll play midfield next season) and Mundy we have good players who lack experience. Need another year or two into Brayshaw, Cerra, Banfield. Giro and Crowden might make it.
Assuming Sandi doesn't play much, we are missing one ruckman. Darcy is fine, but he needs a support who kicks goals too. I'd put Tabs in the role, but that leaves too much of a hole in the forward line.
Forwards is where we fall down. McCarthy would look better if the whole forward line functioned. Cox will be solid, but needs a couple of years. Tabs is fine, but not a world beater. Son Son looked lost after the first few games of the season - if he could return to a permanent forward role he would be more damaging. Ballas is on his last legs. Matera tries hard (faint praise). Sheridan, Tucker, Gray and others ...

So no, we still need a couple of good forwards.

It amuses me greatly, that the people who rate our list as Z-, are the same people that rate Lyon as among the top 1 coaches in the comp. There are none so blind as they who can not see. As for us getting smashed in the contested ball this year, I recall games where we won contested ball, clearances and inside 50's and got smashed on the scoreboard, so that doesn't wash with me either. The only talls we have in our forward line are those that are running in under the footy as it is kicked in.

And therein lies the problem.

In a game that requires you to outscore your opponent - having deficiencies at the pointy end (I.e. forward line) really makes it hard to win.

It’s an area you could argue we have always struggled with. Outside of Pav, we’ve never been able to unearth a genuine power forward. Clive was fun to watch but not a natural footballer.

It’s probably why we’ve thrown the kitchen sink at every available (or desirable) KPF in recent history - all to no avail.

Maybe Hogan won’t be the answer to all our troubles but I’d feel a lot happier knowing he was going to be wearing purple next year.

God knows I need something to look forward to while I listen to my friends and family gloat over their latest flag.

Conca is a free agent - he’s not costing picks. If Neale is going he can rotate through the middle as a bigger body while Cerra and Brayshaw hone their craft.

After a solid start I thought Tabs was going to have a good year...but alas! We had 8 wins (all wins are precious), a couple of other reasonable losses...so we showed Something. But...our low points were abysmal. I want to see the joy of playing (why else would they be there) and some real vigour and fight in our bad games. The skills will follow. But...it starts at the top. Bond going may release some tension in that place...Lyon is another issue.

It amuses me greatly that those on here that rate Lyon and pretty much everyone employed or associated directly with FFC as Z-, seem to think our list is (and was when Harvey was coaching) A+.

Hatred blinds as totally as anything else.

Funny how it’s not the CEO missing a target 20m away, under no pressure, or the Football Manager missing a set shot from 15m straight in front.

Sure skills need to be taught and trained but if you’re a highly paid, professional athlete and you can’t regularly hit targets by foot or hand - surely there’s an expectation you take the time to improve upon yourself??

If all on-field errors are excusable and the sole responsibility of the coach, if you don’t like the coach/CEO/Board, how can you then rate the same poorly skilled playing list as A-grade??

We are where we are due to a lack of quality players coming through to support the existing A-graders. The trading in of players like BHill, Wilson & Hamling, in particular, have papered over the drafting holes our list has had to contend with since 2010.

If we recruit anyone this year that doesn’t possess elite skills then it shows we’ve learnt nothing.

Listen to what players from Hawthorn, eagles, Cats, say about skills and how much their coaches value them. Then try and convince me it is not the coaches fault that he is not putting more training time into skills. Most of those skills need to be worked on in a team environment, not just in a kick to kick with your mate from Lake Grace, down the local park. The only individual skill that can be easily worked on solo is goalkicking.

Morgan, your comment on Lyon has changed by playing kids...what choice does he have when we have let go several mature guys..one played in a GF.
The change of game plan...having no one in the forward fifty?
