TOPIC: Ring the Bell, looks like it's official

Morgan, did we have a long term plan to secure a mature aged ruckman? We got rid of Jon Griffin last year so presumably we were at one point in the past 12 months pretty confident in someone coming through from the bottom.

When the question is asked why teams like Hawthorn and Geelong continually do well, it's because of this stuff. They don't collect the same player because none of them are quite right. They are efficient and purposeful.

TBH, it’s hardly a good look or show of loyalty to bugger off overseas and miss your club’s B&F - particularly a club that has paid you somewhere in the vicinity of $750,000 per AFL game over the preceding 3 years - yet re-signed you AGAIN in the hope the onfield actions start and the off-field BS stops.

It should also be noted who it was that gave Harley his extension - the recently departed Bond & Lloyd.

Both of them were instrumental in getting Bennell across from GC, at great cost both in terms of salary cap & draft picks. FWIW, the pick we traded Bennell (#16) for could have got us GWS’ Himmelberg - who at 194cm has played 38 games and kicked 35 goals. Couldn’t we have used a forward like that the past 3 years?!

So despite the great relationship that HB has with Roly - that contract extension smacked of self-interest for the 2 aforementioned ex-officials.

If you want a reason why LN might be peeved with his current contract remuneration - look no further than HB who has been earning more, playing less and hardly displaying the leadership qualities (on or off-field) one expects from a senior & highly paid squad member.

The re-signing of Bennell might just have been the last straw for Cowboy.

I’m quite comfortable with this development as Belly may just be starting to implement a policy of ‘no d*ickheads’ - a policy that has served WA cricket so well since Langer brought that philosophy with him and turned their fortunes around.

It could also free up a list spot for possibly one of Grey or Sheridan to be retained - both of whom prob deserve one over Bennell when looking at their behaviour and actions over the past 3 seasons.

Take this example.

If we lose Lachie Neale because he's offered $200K more by another team; and we get Lobb but we've got Sandilands earning $300K a year to play with Peel, that mistake costs us our Best & Fairest.

I don't care who we end up with, as long as no one ever mentions Justin Langer on here again. Please.

It's hard to blame a new list manager with that scenario, Shane because most of the situation has been inherited.

Bell has only been in the job 4 days.

Give him time to see how he reacts to what he has. So far, he's making all the right noises but it's way too early to tell.

That said, yes, other clubs have done that list manager but so much better. Maybe we can learn from that

Hawthorn stumbled into a golden generation of talent, stuck with a guy who became a great coach, and rode their success into a new era of player empowerment. Since 2015 they have won the same number of finals as Freo, and are looking down the barrel of a decade of medocrity.

Two years ago Lynch signs with Hawthorn. Now it's Richmond. Their fitness coach, beloved at the club, will go to Calrton because there is nothing in it for him to stick around.

Geelong has won two finals since 2011.

I don't doubt they are well run operations, but I think people overrate how clever they are.

Sorry Yoss, couldn’t think of another example at the time.

I vow to never mention that slime-loving, Chardonnay swilling, Western suburbs snob again.

Is all forgiven??

I was not my intent to apportion blame, Yeti. I would have just liked to be told that we're changing course.

I'm not convinced we had a course to change.

We might do now though

I don't think you can lay full blame on Bond and Lloyd for re-signing Bennell when Roly emphatically came out and said he would give a ten year extension if it were his choice.

What is Bennell worth to another club? Nothing because he cannot overcome injury. I can only assume his constant calf tears (usually an older player's curse) have not meant the area is getting more resistant to repeat injury...the exact opposite, as in we are all just waiting for the next calf this or that. We have gambled with him but I think it must grate on players when someone keeps getting contracted, based on potential, but not based on realistic realisation of that potential. Some of the off field stuff is just silly, despite the obvious frustration at not being able to play the game he loves. We don't owe HB anything, in fact he has had a very patient club give him every chance to play AFL.
