CA, its like Wilson, saying he hates the Slime, no amount of money would have him wear baby shit yellow. So Kelly can suit himself. I think the upside to potentialy losing Neale is that with Brissie's pick 4 or 5 depending, we suddenly have a little more bargaining power if we decide to not use our 2 top 5 picks. Either way, lets see what the cobblers can cobble.

CA, as a free agent, we don’t have to trade with Richmond for Conca - unless they wanted to match our offer.

Richmond would get a compensation pick based on the contract length & value. Prob a second or third rounder.

As we have few picks outside our current first round, Conca would be an effective pick 90+ as we wouldn’t be likely to use that high a pick to draft a newbie.

So while he takes a list spot - it’s not via a loss of a draft pick.

I reckon there a lot of deals being discussed that we have no idea about. Deals which we will yield us other picks in this draft. I only hope we are not offering Conca money which the likes of other similarly aged (and better performing) freo players are not going to be earning. I also hope we don't cough up a high draft pick for him...100 games in about 7 seasons! No way...third round at best.

I don't mind having Conca as a depth player, but not as a guaranteed starting mid.
Surely our midfield will be:
Sandilands/Darcy
Neale
Fyfe
Bennell
Mundy/Walters/Blakely/plus Conca

How about this scenario:
We take McGovern with next year's round 1 pick plus
We take Lobb with next year's round 2 pick as well as Sean Darcy (but receive back a Round 3 this year)
We take Conca as a free agent.
We keep our round 1 pick this year
We keep Neale.

Do we contend?

Whilst I’d love to see it you’re very optimistic putting Bennell in your starting midfield.

Conca is best 22 in the reigning premiers’ team but not good enough for ours?? He is a RFA and the Tigers will need to shed him (and others) and what they’re paying him to fit Tom Lynch into their cap.

That's the Tiggies problem - you gorge out on high priced talent, you pay for it. I don't mind paying a lot for a player that will add to our state of play.

I'm much more enthused to get Jasen Carter going at Freo. I'm worried that Cockburn Control have shuffled the player development of younger players to the back of the queue with a focus on ready-mates.

Conca is number 20-22 in that best 22.

It's the equivalent of having other clubs chasing Sutcliffe or Sheridan in 2013 because they were in our best 22. Conca is much older than they were at the time with similar limitations in skills. He's an in and under player who doesn't have great speed or disposal and might be handy back up if we were contending.

We aren't contending though so he's just papering over gaps for a couple of years until he retires. I'd rather play a kid and get some experience into them and if there are a lot of injuries later in the season, maybe he gets a game.

Just because a player is in the best 22 of a premiership side doesn’t mean you pay overs to get them. Who knows Mayney could be a premiership player in a couple of weeks. Rhys Conca gets a gig a Richmond because he buys into the teams system not because he is overly talented. It’s a no from me.
