Yep, you're in the lead by a small margin. They're coming back, just kicked a goal and you've got a ball up in the centre . 10 out of 10 teams would put an extra behind the ball, maybe two.

Only every centre bouncedown. Every stoppage would be chaos.

You can be 1 inch outside the defensive 50 as the umpie bounces it. Ball hits the deck and you backpedal into your defensive arc.

Can you get 10-15m into the 50 in the time it takes the ball to come down, be rucked and then cleared? I reckon so.

Complete waste of time.

If they really wanted to open the game up, they could just start paying the “incorrect disposal” rule properly, none of this “jarred free in the tackle” nonsense, watching the game tonight, there were countless incidents where a player had the ball, took on the tackler and got caught without giving away a free because he’d either just drop the thing or have it slapped out of his hands, in many cases it just meant more players arrived and then ball squirted all over place, going through numerous sets of hand and not being disposed of correctly until it eventually became a ball up with about 20 players around the stoppage.
I understand that they wanted to encourage “stars” to take the game on, but it has backfired and could easily remedy the “congestion” issue the games current admin seems hell bent on fixing.

Or perhaps it really is a bunch of highly paid middle aged men trying to justify their jobs by coming up with “new” ideas to “better” the spectacle of the product.

I came at the incorrect disposal rule from the other way PK. I think having the rule at all encourages 'second to the ball' mentality because there is such a huge onus to dispose correctly. I prefer to give the guy first to the ball some help to play and one way is allowing that a genuine attempt to dispose of the ball is sufficient. The second way is a loosening of the prior opportunity rule which seems to force players to take the first option. In congestion this is so often a one metre handball to someone who's first option is another one metre handball. Give players a second or two longer to assess better options.

Well, Gerro, the compensation for the fella going for the ball, is that any "in the back" " high contact" or "legged" etc will be paid their way. The one thing that pisses me off with the rules now, is that the player with the footy does not , in this day and age, have to dispose of the ball by handpass or kick. As PK has said, it will open the game up, improve player skills, and it will only take a couple of weeks of enforcement for most coaches to work on tackling and disposal skills to prevent giving away free kicks. IF the umpires and the AFL have got the guts to call out the coaches on this in the first place.

Looks like the rules of the game committee read dockerland, from an article in the age....
“The commission is also likely to approve a recommendation for umpires to be more strict on incorrect disposal, to help stop future rolling mauls.”

They need to get NBN, if their internet connection is that slow that they are just now reading Dockerland from 5 years ago, then it is no wonder the game is in a mess.
