TOPIC: 18 metres

So it's an idea to help the defence by clearing the ball more easily to the centre?

Great idea, given the AFL want more goals more often. Top men.

A Docker will still get pinged for a foot on the line.

There is a very good argument to be made for not mucking about with the game. Every change they've introduced has thrown up more problems which has resulted in the need for more changes.

Coaches don't monkey with the game. They have to act within the rules ands develop tactics to best advantage their teams. If you keep the rules stable for more than 5 minutes all coaches will develop tactics and counters to those tactics.

The constant changes lead to uncertainty on how to apply the rules by the umpires and uncertainty by both players and coaches. Don't get me started on how the AFL doesn't change the rules but changes their interpretation week by week.

The '9 meter' rule for rushed behinds is a case in point. There is no mention of '9 meters' in the rule book. That is something the AFL invented as an 'interpretation' that simply doesn't exist in the laws of the game.

I'll repeat my earlier point, stop the knee-jerk reactions and stop trying to manufacture games by constant rule changes and interpretations. Thats the worst aspect of the modern game.

Those two muppets on fox said something about AFL wanting to halve the rule book, in effect reduce the number of rules etc. They did specify something about the hands in the back rule and opening it up to some sort of whimsical interpretation by umps. For those of us who remember the old push in the back rule...it was open to corruption by pushers and by pushees. The introduction of hands in the back cleaned up that really messy rule. Any hands in the back...free kick. The old push in the back was the tool of inept backmen who could not out-body their opponents. Some players may argue that they are only resting their hand on the back while they get into postion etc...NO NEED, USE YOUR BODY! Best rule change we have ever had...hand in the back...free kick!

They extended the goalsquare for Lyon, now he can instruct the kicker-in to kick 20 meters backwards instead of 20 meters sideways, he will be a much happier Lyon next season.

A great rule change was the one that stopped you wrestling a guy who had just taken a mark. Prior to this rule, someone would mark a ball, and their opponent would hold them up long enough for the defence to get back.

And I don't know what rule change stopped players coming from behind and punching the head of the guy going for the mark. Watch games from the 1990's and you'll see all the players who led and marked duck their heads the instant they had the mark - so as to avoid a fist in the head from behind.

If I was allowed one rule change for next year, it would be the "deliberate out of bounds" rule. It would become a free kick for any kick that went out of bounds without being touched, and a free handball for any handball that went out of bounds without being touched. The rule would only apply where, had a successful tackle been laid on the person to kick/handball out of bounds, it would have been holding the ball. Everything else is a throw in. Essentially it stops the idea of "disguising" an attempt to get the ball out of bounds.

And here goes the hobby horse...

Any intercept mark is paid, regardless of distance in flight. Just do it.

Nobody could possibly disagree. Try disagreeing. It's impossible.

One game change I would implement is to do away with the field/central umpire and make them all just umpires. I'm sure the guys running the boundary see a lot of things not reported as they are just focused on the line. When I was an Auskick coach, you miss so many things as all you are watching is the ball so once it is kicked you are following its path.

This will probably see the ball get bombed into the back line, but just back of centre. Then I can see the game becoming a point for point kicking match with a big pack in the centre of the ground. How boring will that become to watch... Bl@@dy kick to kick.

But I do agree with Morgan, calling a goal if the ball hits the goal post before going between the two big sticks... after all, why are they called GOAL posts?
