So after some 100 years some muppet at AFL HQ decides to change the goal ‘square’ size, not by 10, 20 or 30% in length but twice as long....sigh.

The 6/6/6 rule seems to be reasonable to avoid congestion in the middle, but the 18m goal rectangle appears that it will change the game dramatically.....like a soccer goal kick into your attacking half?

I understand that the idea is that it makes it more difficult for the team that has just scored to "lock" the ball into the attacking zone thus preventing repeat scoring. Clearing the ball from an 18m zone allows the defending team to launch an attack by getting the ball into a wider area of the ground.
It is hoped that the strategy will open the game up.

Make it mandatory for the kick to be a torp - no one will know where the thing will go. That will open the game up.

I hate rule changes but love the barrel (like 99% of footy nuts).

If the opposition can kick the ball into the centre of the ground after a point, it becomes an even greater penalty for teams carrying players who miss easy set shots. Luckily we’ve got notorious marksmen Taberner and Cox manning the key forward positions.

On the other hand, how much fun will it be watching Wilson rip balls into the centre square off an opposition miss.

I wouldn't just make the square longer, I'd probably extend it out to the point posts as well.

I've never really been persuaded by the 'not mucking about with the game' argument. Coaches muck around with it all the time. Most of the time intent of the league seems to be to return the game to something that looks like football, albeit the execution could be better.

People have spent all season bemoaning the fact Lyon only starts 5 men forward (albeit there is less complaint about Hardwick doing exactly the same thing). I thought you'd be happy if someone forced his hand.

I'm not fussed either way about the 6-6-6. I reckon runners can get stuffed entirely. I also reckon there are too many score reviews, so I'd get rid of posters and have goals count if they hit the post on the way through (it would also technically increase scoring, which would make the advertisers happy).

But then I'd probably also go down to 16 players a side, so I'm definitely in the interventionist camp with these things.

The WAFL is withering on the vine for lack of resources - but the A(V)FL’s priority is to further mess with the rules and traditions of the game??

How about pouring some money into a ‘traditional’ footy state to attract and retain the better players and all of a sudden the quality of the games improve without faffing around with the rules??

Not while ‘Nero’ Gil is in charge and spending more time helping his family get babysitters than resourcing the game at its grass roots.

A mark taken in the square is lined up directly in front. Extending the rectangle to 18m doubles the area that a kick is re-aligned to directly in front.
Currently, a rushed behind from end of the square or beyond is a free kick for deliberate. Is that now kept at 9m? Or will it now be from 18m?

Pushing back the straightened-up kick from a goal-polyhedron mark from 9m to 18m would only affect those who can't kick for sh%t.

In the event of a rushed behind from 18m out... MULTIBALL!!!
