TOPIC: Barlow

Mickey B did wonders for our club. It’s obvious that the broken leg did him no favours. Like Mora’s multiple knee recos. And it’s only an opinion. Rightly or wrongly. But don’t let me stop you changing your username if you feel it’s gonna help.

Stick with with it Jezzaargh, we do differentiate between you and Lyon's boy. You will be with us long after they ride off into the sunset. And it was not name calling Jezza.

Did Mickey B play enough games to be a life member??? If not, we should bring him back just to ensure he does. I would happily waste any of our late draft picks on him especially if 6-6-6 becomes reality, especially if LN goes.

Where are our skills and posessions going to come from otherwise.... ? Ready made player who is gonna give his all

Would love that too Cletus, as would a lot of Freo supporters but can you really imagine Roly swallowing that much humble pie? I can't.
The crazy thing is guys like him and De Boer were worth more to the club than just on field stats. Besides the fact that they were and are worth more on the field than some of the blokes that have got a pretty regular game this year, what they could give to a young playing group as mentors is irreplaceable.
How supporters can see that and the the coach, recruiting team, board, whoever, couldn't is just another unfathomable Fremantle letdown.

Think it's 150 games for life membership.

Genuine question: how many mentors do you need in a squad? This season we had Mundy, Sandi, Johnno and Ballas as the old heads, a bunch of mid-20s leaders like Fyfe, A Pearce and Walters, and development coaches like Roger still kicking around. Mick wanted to play footy. It probably wasn’t going to happen for him here, and it didn’t really at GC17 either.

It’s hard losing admirable players, but it was obvious we needed to get a few more young outside players in the team who could kick, and Barlow and MdB, as good as they are, aren’t that.

I see The Footy Show is on it’s last legs. I’d get rid of it and give Mick his own show.

I understand that Morgan but then to play others like Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Matera, Tucker and Grey who don't get the ball anywhere near as much and in most of their cases aren't good kicks either doesn't make sense.

Three of them of course haven't been offered a contract for next year.

I don't think Barlow's kicking is that bad either. Not saying he's great, but Fyfe and Neale aren't elite kicks either. I'm not too sure that Barlow would classed as just an outside player either.

The thing about Barlow was that he was 190 odd cm, knew "how to get the aggot", knew what to do with it - and yes, CA- , could kick, mark and handball a whole lot better than any player that has been put in as a 'Micky B replacement'.

And the real sore point, is, that we gave him up for absolutely nothing!!

The thing he couldnt do anymore is fulfill the requirements of Rolys dud gameplan...ie running all the way down there to create a 'fustercluck' and then run all the way back up there IF, we get posession of the ball, and IF our atrocious skills allow us to retain it.

I admit, he had lost his speed.

But its still almost the most unconsciounable list management decision we have ever made, as far as I am concerned.

If we'd got something for him, well, fair enough. But to dispose a player /character of his quality was simply stupid.

Here’s a few names. Barlow, De Boer, Mzungu, Silvagni, etc. Now here are some more, Neale, Fyfe, Hamling, Wilson, Langdon, Blakey, Ryan, Pearce, Logue etc. You can throw Sheridan, Sutcliffe etc. At some point players will be jettisoned out of a club. You turn your list over. For us it was a dramatic list overhaul. Roly spoke at the Doig a couple of years ago about a gut wrenching feeling seeing Mzungu et al go. Forget game plan, forget the running up and down the park. You get to the GF, you come up empty. 2 years later, minor premiers, nekminit fall from grace. The natives since have been vocal. Get rid of all in sundry, they say. The media playing the same tune. It’s broken, the club is endeavouring to remedy the situation. The noise will subside. It often does.

Cletus, I was under the impression that we let him go on the basis that he had a two-year deal offered to him by the Suns, and we didn't want to stand in his way. The club has done some things that I have questioned (and indeed, some things that have been roundly criticised - especially on here), but personally I think they generally seem to do the right thing by past players (although I can immediately think of one exception, and I am sure that there are others). While that doesn't bring about visible, short-term success, I think it's an important principle, especially since the club is still relatively young.

On the topic at hand, I didn't see Mick Barlow's game against Geelong, although it was obviously statistically impressive. Ultimately the Suns lost by 102 points though, which indicates that his 35 possessions can't have been all that influential, and also that the Suns are probably closer at this point to being wound up than being any good while Mick Barlow is under the age of 40. I reckon Hawthorn would have liked to have had him on their list last weekend. I hope that he gets another chance.
